The U.S. commander in Afghanistan has announced that a stray rocket used during an offensive against Taliban insurgents has killed 12 civilians. The commander has apologized to Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the incident. —JCL

The New York Times:

The top United States commander in Afghanistan confirmed that a rocket went astray during operations in the Marja area of Helmand province, killing 12 civilians, according to a statement issued by the International Security Assistance Force and the Afghan Ministry of Defense.

Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the ISAF commander, ordered the withdrawal of the type of rocket launcher used in the incident, a high-mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS), from operations “until a thorough review of this incident has been conducted,” the statement said.

The American commander, who has made reducing civilian casualties a cornerstone of his policy in Afghanistan, apologized to President Hamid Karzai for the incident. “We deeply regret this tragic loss of life,” General McChrystal said. “The current operation in central Helmand is aimed at restoring security and stability to this vital area of Afghanistan. It’s regrettable that, in the course of our joint efforts, innocent lives were lost.”

The policeman’s defense, “Well in order to keep him from killing himself, I shot him to death.” That of course is the problem with our being in Afghnistan, there is no way for us a Foreign Army to win, because there is no way for us to avoid killing innocent people, natives of their own country killed by foreigners (us)will not work, being foreign and killing people in their own homes and market places doesn’t work. Why are we there?

The answer to give the Military-Industrial Complex an excuse for stealing America’s tax dollars to make a minority of well connected people very, very rich. The result will ultimately be collapse of our country, in 50 years you won’t be able to tell the difference between us and a third world dictatorship.

Opportunists love war, power seems important to some, ah! Then their is always the money and of course the focus on important things like the next offensive which will be like none before it.

Smart bombs? As opposed to stupid bombs? They must hire people to name these things, maybe unemployed race horse namers?

Clearly someone needs to be ignored for that person has nothing to do but interrupt laboring men at conversation with disjointed reminiscences of imaginary exploits and successes. I can do that. Oh, me too. So can I, okay why don’t we all try.

I wonder how my Afghan civilian deaths can be directly attributed to U.N. aggression?

I find “making peace” with the Taliban and Al-Qa’eda disgusting, quite disgusting. However, I also find the willful killing of civilians like this DISGUSTING. They are innocent people, who probably have not a political itch in their whole community. We kill them with bombs from the sky. Invisible warfare against innocent peasants; we seem to do this a lot, remember Vietnam. Why is it necessary, can you explain it to me? Please?

Did anyone know their names I wonder? Just saying that a family of 12 died makes them sound kind of anonymous.

@yours truly - quit huffing glue, the delirium brought on by your rapidly dying brain-cells is making you write preposterous things.

Anyway, big surprise - you can bet that thousands fled (the smart/capable ones) the area as well, including Taliban-fighters. People don’t just die, but their lives are disrupted and property destroyed, McChrystal is being disingenuous by acting contrite - he knows what’s up.

These made-for-TV ‘offensives’ are just plain dumb… this is being sold like a modern Operation Overlord, with Terry-Taliban playing the role of the SS ‘HitlerJugend’ - though no-one gave him the script and he just runs away instead of dying in big, camera-friendly clumps, and these assholes will end up punching-air once again (unless some poor bloody civilians get in the way… oh right, it’s a fairly heavily-populated area).

A People To People Proposal For Attaining Peace On Earth And Goodwill To All Living Beings

Whereas, President Obama and Congress have proven themselves incapable of giving peace a chance,

and whereas, given the Internet, there’s never been a more opportune time for people to people interaction,

It is hereby proposed that there ba an online people to people gathering between peacemakers here in America and Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders, the terms of which could be that (1) in exchange for an immediate truce and end to the bloodshed, the U.S. and its NATO allies withdraw all their troops from Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, and (2) that instead of the U.S. government’s unconditional support for the settler-state Israel, that it demand justice for the Palestinian people.  It is anticipated that the Taliban and Al Qaeda leadership will agree to such a proposal, whereupon, the pressure will be on the Obama administration to at least consider it.  By that time the peace movement will have reconstituted itself enough so as to force the president’s hand, thereby giving peace a real chance.
