Pope Assails World Leaders Who Lie

Posted on Jan 3, 2006

Pope Benedict XVI, in his World Day of Peace speech Jan. 1, had more than a few choice words for world leaders who use lies to incite their citizens towards violence. He did not mention President Bush specifically. A few excerpts:

“After experiences like [the Holocaust], how can we fail to be seriously concerned about lies in our own time, lies which are the framework for menacing scenarios of death in many parts of the world.”

“Those authorities who, rather than making every effort to promote peace, incite their citizens to hostility towards other nations, bear a heavy burden of responsibility: in regions particularly at risk, they jeopardize the delicate balance achieved at the cost of patient negotiations and thus help make the future of humanity more uncertain and ominous.”

thanks for the link to the entire message. i might not have read it otherwise. it is surprising and not at the same time. after all he was john paul’s foremost advisor so it only seems right that the same message continues with personal adjustments. i am not a big fan of the churches of the world in light of the constant battle of “my god’s better than your god” but this is a message of inclusion of all which is never a bad thing. maybe his flock will listen to him better than they seem to listen to others and finally move us toward the vision of his message. hope springs eternal...baby steps, always baby steps.

This forthright statement is definitely more than I would have expected from this Pontiff and certainly in keeping with the tradition of his predescessor.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention.  Glad you’re here.

But it’s still A-OKAY for the vatican to lie to impoverished Africans about condoms and comdemn countless thousands to a horrible death.
