Danforth Takes On the Christian RightPosted on Feb 2, 2006Washington Post: ST. LOUIS-- Jack Danforth wishes the Republican right would step down from its pulpit. Instead, he sees a constant flow of religion into national politics. And not just any religion, either, but the us-versus-them, my-God-is-bigger-than-your-God, velvet-fist variety of Christian evangelism.
As a mainline Episcopal priest, retired U.S. senator and diplomat, Danforth worships a humbler God and considers the right’s certainty a sin. Legislating against gay marriage, for instance? “It’s just cussedness.” As he sees it, many Republican leaders have lost their bearings and, if they don’t change, will lose their grip on power. Not to mention make the United States a meaner place. | story Previous item: Frey's Note Both Accepts and Ducks Blame Next item: Iran Threatens to Retaliate on Nuclear Issue Elsewhere: . I used to vote Republican and for the first time in 2004 I voted Democrat because Bush acted too much like the lying pastors I had come to know. (Once you’ve seen one of these guys, you’ve pretty much seen them all. But I’ve seen a few.) I’ve always been officially unenrolled. I used to belong to a huge assembly of the far-right faction of Christianity until I was reborn in the renewing of my mind—and walked away from the radicals. Danforth’s comments below post issues I had with the extremists who are tearing our country apart in the name of Jesus Christ. The rational right needs to get the extremist factions of the far-right Christians out of government before they destroy this country with their us-against-them holy war in America!

I made a vow after the Supreme Court gave America to Bush, et al, that I would never vote for any Republican again. I did NOT vote for Bush - nor did the majority of Americans. That being said, unless some Democrat with the same wonderfully American view like Jack Danforth, I could be compelled to vote for him as President. I mourn the loss of what America has meant to me all my life. I feel the picture of my beloved country, as colored by the Republican party, is as a mean, self-serving, vicious toward opponents, win at any costs, to Hell with honesty and integrity bully on the planet. I mourn for our dead soldiers who have given all in a rigged up war; I mourn for all the innocent Iraqis who never harmed us in any way but are now dead because of the radical right-wing of the Republican party; I mourn because the Democrats haven’t had the balls to take our country back - starting with Al Gore rolling over and giving the Presidency to Bush without a fight.
So - it is so refreshing and encouraging to read the thoughts of a sane Christian Republican. It gives me hope for the future. I’m sure he is prepared to be savaged by the pious, self-righteous Christian right. I deplore their claim to Christianity in light of their rampaging plunder and sliming slander they throw at any and all opponents. They are anything but Christ-like!
