A Slow, Cruel Death

A man executed in Florida on Wednesday took 34 minutes to die by lethal injection, and required two doses of lethal chemicals.  He appeared to grimace before dying, leading some to believe he experienced pain from the procedure.

Sudan Rejects Darfur Proposals

Sudan was unimpressed by threats from the U.S. and Britain to adopt alternative measures, including a proposed no-fly zone, to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Darfur, where the U.N. estimates around 200,000 people have died.  Meanwhile, Khartoum continues to prevent U.N. peacekeepers from entering the country.

Circumcision Reduces AIDS Risk

According to officials from the National Institutes of Health, circumcision reduces the risk in men of contracting HIV through heterosexual sex by roughly 50%.  The announcement was based on several recent studies conducted in Africa.

Democrats’ Senate Majority Endangered

Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) appears to have suffered a stroke and remains under evaluation at George Washington University Hospital.  Should Johnson have to resign because of illness, the governor of South Dakota, a Republican, could appoint a replacement from his own party, taking away the Democrats’ majority in the Senate and giving Vice President Dick Cheney the tie-breaking vote.

Bush Stalls on New Strategy

The president has delayed a speech announcing possible changes in his Iraq strategy because, according to White House press secretary Tony Snow, he didn’t feel it was ready. Snow was careful to say that didn’t mean Bush was planning last-minute changes. Does that mean an ineffective strategy should remain in place, with the death toll mounting, because the rhetoric needs work?
