Congress Mass-Produces Antiwar Legislation

Daily Kos has an excellent rundown of the 11 antiwar bills bursting forth from both houses of Congress. Some legislation is tougher than the rest, but the sheer number of proposals seems to indicate that the legislative branch is bending to the will of the people. It’s a good day for democracy.

On Wednesday the “doomsday clock” ticked two minutes closer to midnight as the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists assessed threats from nuclear proliferation and global warming. Meant to signify humanity’s proximity to a major global catastrophe, the clock is currently set to 11:55 p.m.

This, from the cleric whom Bush embraced so fervently last month.

State of Emergency for California Crops

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in California after nearly three-quarters of the state’s citrus crop was wiped out by subfreezing weather last week, causing up to $1 billion in losses. Prices around the country are expected to rise drastically, as California is the nation’s major producer of fresh citrus fruit.

The U.S. and North Korea may meet for a second and possibly even a third round of talks following a surprise meeting. Condoleezza Rice may join Dick Cheney as a witness in “Scooter” Libby’s perjury trial. The secretary of state’s name appeared on a list of potential witnesses that included Karl Rove, Paul Wolfowitz, George Tenet, Colin Powell and members of the Washington media elite.
