Immigrants Protest Bush Proposal

Immigrant rights groups are voicing their opposition to the president’s new migrant worker plan, which would allow undocumented workers to buy $3,500 permits every three years to remain in the country. Democrats and the Catholic Church have also criticized the proposed policy, which is harsher and costlier than a previous proposal supported by Bush.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned that the climate crisis could afflict billions of people, especially the poor, with food and water shortages, drought and flooding. “For the first time, we are no longer arm-waving with models; this is empirical data,” explained one of the panel’s leading scientists.

The Iraqi insurgency is now nationwide and deadlier than ever, despite the recent surge of U.S. forces.  More than 30 people, many of them women and children, were reported dead and dozens wounded Friday when a suicide bomber set off explosives that released chlorine gas in Ramadi—just one of several fatal incidents this week in Iraq.
