A raid in the Pakistani city of Quetta early this week reportedly resulted in the capture of Taliban Defense Minister Mullah Obaidullah Akhund and other suspects.  Officials said the arrest occurred as Vice President Dick Cheney was passing through the country’s southwestern region.

Plame Ready for Close-Up

Variety reported Friday that Warner Bros. has bought the “life rights” (a somewhat alarming term) of former CIA agent Valerie Plame and her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, and plans to make a movie about their lives. In addition to using secondhand accounts of Plame’s outing by big players in the Bush administration, WB scribes may pull from her memoir, “if the CIA permits her to publish it.”

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is dabbling in revisionist history. Despite the historical evidence, and a 1993 apology by a government official, Abe now denies any Japanese military involvement in forcing thousands of women into brothels throughout Asia in the 1930s and ‘40s.

Famed Historian Schlesinger Dead at 89

Arthur M. Schlesinger died Wednesday from a heart attack at the age of 89. A Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and Kennedy White House fixture, Schlesinger wrote or edited more than 25 books and once referred to George W. Bush’s post-9/11 policy as “a ghastly mess.”

90 Percent of Guard Units ‘Not Ready’

An independent commission established by Congress has found that the Defense Department is not adequately equipping and funding the National Guard. Roughly 90 percent of U.S. National Guard units are designated “not ready.” The commission determined that the Guard is ill-prepared to meet its obligation to defend the homeland and respond rapidly and effectively in a crisis.

U.N. Leader: Climate Crisis as Dangerous as War

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon warned Thursday that the danger posed by war “is at least matched by the climate crisis,” and urged the U.S., which produces roughly 25 percent of all greenhouse emissions, to take a leading role in addressing global warming.

Democrats Issue First Subpoenas

As expected, the House Judiciary Committee issued subpoenas Thursday as part of an investigation into the Justice Department’s alleged partisan abuse of U.S. attorneys. The decision marks the first time Democrats have exercised their reclaimed subpoena power. Chairwoman Linda Sánchez called the move a “last resort.”
