Quagmire Deepens for Gonzales

The crumb trail of evidence in the U.S. attorney firing scandal leads ever more convincingly to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales following today’s testimony by his ex-chief of staff, Kyle Sampson.  According to Sampson, both Gonzales and Harriet Miers “approved” and “signed off on” the plan to oust the eight federal prosecutors.

The Iranian foreign minister has said if Britain admits it made a mistake and violated Iran’s territorial waters, it would “facilitate” an end to the standoff over 15 captured British sailors and marines. Polar ice experts warned Wednesday that a Texas-size block of ice in the Antarctic has thinned surprisingly fast. The Amundsen Sea Embayment contains enough water to elevate sea levels worldwide nearly 20 feet.

Aide: U.S. Attorney Firings Were Politically Motivated

According to prepared remarks obtained in advance of his testimony, Alberto Gonzales’ former chief of staff believes the eight U.S. attorneys were fired for political reasons: “A U.S. attorney who is unsuccessful from a political perspective ... is unsuccessful.” Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Pat Leahy warned that even Gonzales’ resignation would not derail his investigation into the firings.

Pelosi Tells Bush to ‘Calm Down’

With Congress nearing a consensus on a withdrawal timetable, the president repeated the claim Wednesday that Democrats would be held responsible for denying the troops funding. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded by saying Bush should “Calm down with the threats,” and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid simply asked, “Why doesn’t he get real with what’s going on with the world?”

A group of off-duty Shiite policemen is suspected of shooting about 70 Sunni men inside their homes Tuesday night in Talafar, an Iraqi border town that President Bush once pointed to as proof that Iraqi forces were able to contain insurgent violence.

San Francisco to Ban Plastic Bags

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is expected to sign off on a citywide ban on petroleum-based plastic bags. The prohibition, the first of its kind in the nation, is meant to encourage the use of less harmful alternatives, including biodegradable plastic, cloth and paper bags.
