Three former college football teammates of Sen. George Allen say the Virginia Republican repeatedly used the racial epithet to describe blacks back in the 1970s. And one of those ex-teammates is even putting his name on the record. (Salon ad req’d)

    Diebold Employee Alleges Shenanigans

A Diebold whistle-blower has cited a mysterious patch that possibly swung the 2002 Georgia election as evidence that the company can’t be trusted.  Days before the vote, Democrats in both the Senate and governor’s race were ahead in the polls by 5% and 11%, respectively, only to lose by a narrow margin on election day.  (h/t: Engadget)

Limbaugh Blames Dems for GOP Scam

Rush Limbaugh, with the kind of moral vacuousness that has come to define the man, recently blamed the “stupidity” of Democrats for allowing Republicans to disenfranchise voters: “And they show up on Wednesday to vote when the polls are closed, and the Democrats claim a trick has been played on them. Grim New Milestones

U.S. combat deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan now equal the 2,973 lives lost during the Sept. 11 attacks. Also, the number of civilians slain in Iraq in the last month reached an unprecedented level: 6,599 dead.

  • And, oh yeah: Not only are U.S. troop levels in Iraq unlikely to decrease any time soon, but U.S. commanders say even more troops are needed.

    War Clouds Gathering Over Iran?

The Nation is reporting that the Pentagon has moved up the deployment of a major “strike group” of ships, including an aircraft carrier, to head for the Persian Gulf, just off Iran’s western coast. This is not conclusive, but it follows all kinds of other ominous signs of an impending strike on Iran.

Has American Airlines Banned Gay Air-Kissing?

An interesting confluence of apparent homo- and terror-phobia: A gay couple flying on an JFK-bound AA flight out of Paris were told that their air kissing was impermissible; when the couple inquired further, the captain threatened to divert the plane.
