Brownie’s Looking to Do Heck of a Job in Calif.

Michael D. Brown’s got cojones—either that, or a distressing lack of self-awareness on some fundamental level.  The former FEMA director, roundly roasted for his too-little-too-late leadership style during Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath, is now aiming to bring his disaster management skills to California’s fire-ravaged regions.

Che’s Hair Goes on Sale

A former U.S. intelligence officer involved in the execution of Ernesto “Che” Guevara has decided to auction a lock of the icon’s hair for a minimum of $100,000.  The officer is unhappy with Guevara’s iconic status, auctioneer Tom Slater says, yet he seems perfectly content to profit from it.

White House Explores Global Warming’s Health Benefits

The White House should hand out pamphlets featuring stock photos of squealing, happy children and serene-looking seniors entitled “Global Warming And You!” after spokeswoman Dana Perino’s startling musings about possible “health benefits” of global warming.  Perino made the comments, with a disclaimer, in speaking with reporters Wednesday at the White House.

Bush’s California Adventure

The president has at last landed in the Golden State to see for himself the fires that have caused over a billion dollars in damage and forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. With uncomfortable parallels to Katrina already in place, we can’t say we’re all that excited about his arrival here.

Jimmy Carter: Bush Will Make a Good Ex-President

Jimmy Carter told the new Web site Guardian America that, compared to the Bush presidency at least, George W. Bush will make a “very good” ex-president. Carter also said of Hillary Clinton’s seemingly insurmountable lead in the polls: “One thing I know is that, this far ahead of time in the past, it’s been impossible to predict the outcome of the election.”

Court Victory for DIY Porn Enthusiasts

There’s been a slight shift in the regulation of pornography in America, thanks to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, that might appeal to those of-age-and-consenting types interested in creating racy footage of themselves without the goal of profiting (monetarily, anyhow).

Rudy’s Baseball Betrayal

In an act of political expediency that makes Mitt Romney look like a paragon of consistency, Rudy Giuliani has backed the hated Boston Red Sox in the World Series. New York, home of Giuliani’s beloved Yankees, is aghast.

Fan of Failure

Ever a fan of failed policy, President Bush has reiterated his support of the embargo against Cuba, which, one might recall, was enacted more than four decades ago to force Fidel Castro from power. Bush also praised the patient (and sometimes violent) Cuban dissidents, who, he said, one day “will be the nation’s leaders.”

A State Dept. Band-Aid for Blackwater Problem

The State Department will implement new measures to guard against a repeat of last month’s Blackwater slaughter of 17 Iraqi civilians, but some of the new rules, including more cultural awareness training, feel like a Band-Aid on a serious head wound. In addressing this issue, the Iraqi government has chosen to make a point of its sovereignty, and so far the U.S. has done little to allay the Iraqi concerns.

White House ‘Eviscerated’ Climate Report

When Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control, went before Congress to testify on the effects of global warming on Americans’ health, she was about 10 pages lighter than planned. According to a source within the CDC, the White House “eviscerated” Gerberding’s prepared remarks, slashing 10 of the original 14 pages.
