Seven American troops were killed in half a dozen separate attacks around Iraq on Saturday. Roadside bombs, the biggest problem for U.S. troops, were responsible for most of the deaths. May was the deadliest month for U.S. troops since November 2004.

FBI Foils JFK Bomb Plot

Four men, including a former cabinet minister from Guyana, have been arrested for plotting to bomb the jet fuel pipeline at New York’s John F. Kennedy airport. They never got beyond the planning and research stage, but the FBI was able to gather fairly incriminating evidence. Once again, investigation and police work have managed to thwart terrorism where stealth bombers and tanks have failed.

Joe Lieberman made an unexpected jaunt to Iraq this week and praised the progress he saw in the form of—listen up—a bustling market. But the troops recruited to have lunch with the ex-Democrat had a different take: “It just seems like we drive around and wait to get shot at.”

Top Bush Aide Resigns

One of President Bush’s closest advisers will celebrate this Independence Day by liberating himself from the White House inner circle. Dan Bartlett, who has served as Bush’s aide since his early political beginnings in Texas, announced on Friday (his 36th birthday) that he will be stepping down around July 4 to seek a new career.
