Stretched Military Extends Tours to Keep Surge Going

Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced Wednesday that the Pentagon is likely to extend the tours of duty of some 100,000 soldiers currently deployed in Iraq by three months. The new policy would enable the surge to last for a year.

Red Cross: Iraqis Face ‘Unbearable and Unacceptable’ Suffering

A new report from the Red Cross says living conditions in Iraq, from healthcare to general safety, continue to worsen. One woman interviewed by the ICRC said it would be helpful if someone removed the bodies piling up in front of her house so her children wouldn’t have to look at them on the way to school.

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform will investigate the Pentagon’s handling of the death of Pat Tillman and the rescue of Jessica Lynch to determine “why inaccurate accounts of these two incidents were disseminated, the sources and motivations for the accounts, and whether the appropriate administration officials have been held accountable.”

Four Serbian men charged with killing six Bosnian Muslims during 1995’s Srebrenica massacre have been convicted by Serbia’s war crimes court.  The four, members of a paramilitary group called the Scorpions, were given jail sentences ranging from five to 20 years.

Congress Beats Bush in Approval Ratings

Forty percent of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing, according to the latest AP poll. That may not seem like much, but it’s up from 25 percent just before the last election and higher than Bush’s mid-30s. A word of warning to candidates who are still fleshing out their Iraq positions: The same poll suggests voters, especially those coveted independents, are really sick of this war.
