Kenya Suffers More Killing

The death toll in Kenya has risen to roughly 800 as violence and rioting continue following a disputed and ethnically charged election. The two candidates in that contest refuse to come to agreement, and some of their supporters have formed gangs along tribal and clan lines.

Hillary Hangs Tough

Although her chief rival and her husband stole the headlines the last few days, Hillary Clinton is still the favorite heading into the Feb. 5 primaries, mostly because of her leads in key big states. Most polls, however, are out of date at this point and probably won’t catch up until it’s time to vote.

Angling for Edwards’ Loyal Lawyers

Politics mixed with martinis and swizzle sticks as campaign aides from Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama’s camps infiltrated a Puerto Rican resort in an effort to woo John Edwards’ colleagues and supporters at an annual gathering of top American trial lawyers.  Above, one of the weekend’s political players, Clinton lieutenant Terry McAuliffe.

Controversies Live On After Suharto’s Death in Indonesia

On Monday, a day after his death, former Indonesian President Suharto was given a state funeral and buried in Java, sparking mixed reaction as Indonesians recalled both the strong points and the controversial (even despotic) sides of the man who was their nation’s leader for more than 30 years.

Economy Takes Priority in Bush’s Last State of the Union Speech

Sometimes it’s useful to let a story’s own lead speak for itself. Take, for example, the doozy of a question that opens Sheryl Gay Stolberg’s New York Times article about Bush’s economic focus in Monday’s State of the Union address: “Will George W. Bush be remembered as the president who lost the economy while trying to win a war?”

Two Kennedys Back Obama

It’s been a pretty amazing weekend for Barack Obama. After winning the South Carolina primary by 28 points, he managed to score the endorsements of Caroline Kennedy, who said he has the ability to inspire Americans much as her father did, and Sen. Ted Kennedy, who had been neutral but was so upset with the Clinton campaign’s tactics that he phoned the former president and gave him an earful.

Obama Sweeps South Carolina Primary

Sen. Barack Obama scored a big win in South Carolina on Saturday, winning the state’s Democratic primary with 55 percent of the votes—an impressive lead over competitors Hillary Clinton and John Edwards, who earned 27 percent and 18 percent of the Palmetto State’s primary tally.

Did Bill Clinton Hurt Hillary’s S.C. Showing?

Former President Bill Clinton’s strong words in the days leading up to the South Carolina Democratic primary may have affected Saturday’s results in ways that didn’t help Hillary Clinton, according to exit polls. While polling is under (well-deserved) scrutiny lately, statistics aren’t needed to indicate how risky some of Bill Clinton’s choices have been.

Chimp Defeats Human Memory Champ

Maybe it’s time to stop feeling so smug about our vaunted position on the evolutionary chart. Turns out that we, the self-declared smartypants species of the animal kingdom, have been outstripped by one of our simian cousins, the chimpanzee, when it comes to a particular test of memorization skills.

The Man Who Lost $7.2 Billion

How did a 31-year-old low-level bank trader with limited access lose five times as much money as the worst rogue trader ever? That’s the question European authorities and Societe Generale, France’s second-largest bank, are trying to answer.

Bill Clinton: Hillary Chummy With McCain

Wow, Hillary Clinton’s husband has been très vocal of late, running the gamut of campaign tactics with such alacrity that it almost seems he’s done this before.  Bill Clinton’s latest message is one of unity—specifically, between Hillary and the man who could be her Republican rival on the presidential ballot, John McCain.

European Conservatives Join Forces

Four far-right European political parties have allied with each other, hoping to form a European Union umbrella party opposed to “Islamization” and immigration. Europeans, you see, will never give up their welfare states, so conservatives there spend much of their time bashing immigrants. Unlike America, where xenophobia is, though popular, something of a passing fancy.

NYT Endorses Clinton and McCain, Slams Giuliani

Sure, it can’t help but be at least momentarily interesting that The New York Times’ editorial posse has announced its pick of the Republican and Democratic litters for this presidential election cycle. But far more compelling than Team Gray Lady’s rationale for choosing its favorites is what it had to say about fellow New Yorker Rudy Giuliani.

Immigration Dept. Deports Americans

Despite his Southern accent and the conclusions of a court to the contrary, officials at Immigration and Customs Enforcement managed to convince themselves that Thomas Warziniack was born in Russia. So they detained and planned to deport him. He is just one of hundreds of victims caught up in an unforgiving bureaucracy who beg, often without recourse, to be taken seriously.

Kucinich to Quit Campaign

Dennis Kucinich is expected to announce Friday that he is dropping out of the race for the White House. The Ohio congressman faces four challengers in the primary for his seat in the House. Kucinich’s congressional campaign sent out an “urgent personal appeal” to supporters for donations on Wednesday.
