Justice Investigates Itself Over Waterboarding Approval

The Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating memos and opinions rendered by the department that endorsed the practice of waterboarding, which many consider to be torture. The inquiry is unrelated to the FBI’s criminal investigation of the CIA, which destroyed video recordings of the waterboarding of suspects.

McCain Wishes Castro a Speedy Retirement From Land of the Living

Sen. John McCain, campaigning in Indianapolis, said Cuba won’t be better off under Fidel Castro’s fraternal successor, Raul Castro, whom he called “worse in many respects than Fidel was,” and the Republican front-runner voiced the hope that Fidel will meet his commie maker, Karl Marx, “very soon.”

Turkish Army Enters Iraq

After bombarding the area with airplanes and artillery, Turkish forces entered northern Iraq, ostensibly in search of Kurdish rebels. It isn’t the first time Turkey has crossed the border, but one source described the force as much bigger—roughly 10,000 men—than previous incursions. A U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, however, said he believed only a few hundred Turkish troops were involved in the operation.

The Nation: Gitmo Trials Are Reported Rigged

It’s unfortunately not unusual anymore to hear about the politicization of American legal and intelligence institutions under the Bush administration, but, even so, this report by The Nation’s Ross Tuttle about how the trials of six key prisoners at Guantanamo Bay have allegedly been rigged from the get-go is disturbing. Israel’s Version of Pat Robertson

A member of Israel’s parliament has an unusual explanation for the recent spate of earthquakes in his country: It’s the gays! Specifically, says Orthodox lawmaker Shlomo Benizri, the Israeli government’s acceptance of and tolerance toward homosexuals have incurred God’s wrath in the form of tectonic rumblers.

U.S. Claims Successful Hit on Faulty Satellite

The official reason the U.S. military offered for its show of fireworks Wednesday night high above the Pacific was to shoot down, using an anti-satellite missile, a failed spy satellite before it might do damage upon reentry. However, not everyone read the skywriting that way.

Protesters Set Fire to U.S. Embassy in Belgrade

A demonstration of about 150,000 people near the American Embassy in Belgrade turned riotous Thursday when protesters opposed to Kosovo’s bid for independence from Serbia stormed the embassy and set fire to its façade.

NYT Runs Controversial McCain Story, Spat Ensues

Did unwanted attention from a New Republic scribe prod The New York Times into printing its long-awaited story about certain alleged snags in Sen. John McCain’s moral fabric?  McCain’s camp apparently thinks so, but regardless, the Arizona senator’s team is switching into battle mode to counter the paper’s “smear campaign.”

‘Give Dennis His Due’

Steve Cobble argues in The Nation that Dennis Kucinich, unlike John Edwards, never got proper credit for moving the other candidates leftward. Instead, “the snark and abuse offered Kucinich” when he dropped out was undeserved for a congressman from a tough district who has taken admirable and consistent positions on the issues.

Clinton’s Soft Money Boost

Hillary Clinton has had difficulty keeping pace with Barack Obama’s fundraising, which could explain the launch of a new pro-Clinton 527 group called “American Leadership Project” that already has a commercial it plans to run in Ohio. The group is not subject to the same rules as the campaign and can theoretically raise unlimited amounts of money.

Fed Forecasts Slow Growth in 2008

Officials at the Federal Reserve are running out of creative ways to stave off a recession and expect the U.S. economy to slow to a crawl in 2008, with a growth rate of only 1.3 to 2 percent over the year.

Bhutto’s Husband Won’t Seek PM Position

Although the late Benazir Bhutto’s party, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), fared well in Monday’s parliamentary election, her widower, Asif Ali Zardari (a controversial figure known in some circles as “Mr. Ten Percent”), isn’t planning to follow in her footsteps as Pakistan’s prime minister.

Obama Wins Again

Barack Obama once again swept the evening’s contests, but the big surprise came in Wisconsin, where Hillary Clinton invested much time and money and where the two candidates got caught in a nasty air war. He beat her there by roughly 18 points.

Top Court Sets Back the Foes of Bush’s Wiretaps

The Supreme Court rejected an appeal related to the Bush administration’s warrantless wiretap program on Tuesday, offering no explanation. The American Civil Liberties Union and others have had a hard time proving the plaintiffs were spied on because the evidence they need is considered a government secret.

White House Resists Change in Cuba Policy

“Here is the deal: By any objective measure U.S. policy towards Cuba over the last 50 years has been a failure,” says Rep. Jim McGovern, who organized a bipartisan effort to pressure the Bush administration to rethink Cuba policy in light of Fidel Castro’s resignation. But according to Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte, America’s attempts to isolate Cuba economically and diplomatically won’t go away “any time soon.”
