American Fingers in Iraq’s Cookie Jar

The theory that the Bush administration wanted Iraq for its oil has just gotten a major boost. It turns out that the U.S. State Department sent over a team of lawyers and consultants to help the Iraqi government work out several high-profile no-bid contracts with five Western oil giants.

Mugabe Prevails in Sham Election

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has fought tooth and nail to maintain his position of power during the three months since his authority was threatened by opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, widely recognized (but not by Mugabe) as the winner of last March’s election, and now it looks like all that hard work and abject brutality has paid off.

Floods Fall, Anger Rises

After the past weeks’ disastrous floods, many in the rural Midwest are looking to the government not with gratitude but animosity. Folks in towns that requested levees back in 1993 were left, paradoxically, high and dry by the Army Corps of Engineers, which required small communities to pay more than $1 million for flood barriers.

Congress’ Missing Backbone

After doing everything but follow the overwhelming anti-war mandate given by voters in the 2006 congressional elections, the Democratic-controlled Congress accepted a war bill late Thursday that will keep U.S. troops in Iraq until at least Jan. 20.

A Place Called Unity

Hillary Clinton finally campaigned with Barack Obama, at a rally in the town of Unity, N.H. Never one to miss out on using overtly direct town names—remember Bill Clinton was born in a place called Hope—the Democratic Party may be trying a bit too hard to heal its wounds after a divisive battle in the primaries.

Control-Alt-Delete

It’s official: Microsoft’s top-geek-made-good, Bill Gates, is leaving his full-time position as head of Microsoft on Friday. Now that he’s made more money than regular mortals can even fathom (aside from those congresspeople who approve the defense budget), he’s stepping down in order to focus on his philanthropic work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Zimbabwe Election Goes Forward

After months of strife and bloodshed, the presidential runoff in Zimbabwe finally became a reality Friday; however, it hardly seems like an election, considering there’s only one candidate: long-time President Robert Mugabe.

Obama: ‘I Bit My Tongue’

Barack Obama reportedly told a meeting of the Congressional Black Caucus that “I bit my tongue many times” during his primary battle with Hillary Clinton. The presumptive Democratic nominee is said to have taken a more direct approach with the gathered lawmakers, however, arguing that Democrats do not have time to lick their wounds.

Supreme Court Backs Gun Owners

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Washington, D.C., overreached with its handgun ban and must allow residents to keep guns in their homes. While it is considered a major pronouncement on the Second Amendment, it will take time, lawsuits and possibly even more rulings from the high court before the decision’s full impact is known.

Beyond Swift Boat

We’ve gotten used to the idea of independent groups funneling soft money into political campaign ads, but in this election some progressives are trying to do something entirely new. According to a report by NPR and the Center for Investigative Reporting, a band of crafty activists is trying to create a grand network for progressive issues and groups.

Mugabe Turns a Deaf Ear to Critics

Robert Mugabe has been condemned by everyone from Nelson Mandela to the queen of England over his conduct in Zimbabwe’s runoff election, but he plans to go ahead with the contest even though the opposition has dropped out.

Supreme Court Slashes Exxon Valdez Penalty

Nineteen years ago, the Exxon Valdez supertanker struck a reef in Alaska, causing an environmental catastrophe so devastating its impact continues to be felt. A court later slapped Exxon with $5 billion in punitive damages, but on Wednesday the Supreme Court ruled that the oil giant shouldn’t have to pay more than about a tenth of that amount.

San Franciscans Hoping to Flush in Bush’s Honor

It might be safe to assume that these folks aren’t fans of President Bush: A group calling itself the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco is hoping to commemorate Bush as he leaves office by re-christening a nearby sewage station as the George W. Bush Sewage Plant and by urging locals to flush together on cue on Jan. 20, 2009.

The Democrats’ Green Giant

The Democrats have decided to make their upcoming convention as environmentally friendly as possible, which raises the question: Where does one find 15,000 union- and American-made organic cotton fanny packs? The answer, it turns out, is nowhere.
