McCain Campaign Complains Obama Played ‘Race Card’

“Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. It’s divisive, negative, shameful and wrong,” McCain campaign manager Rick Davis said Thursday. He was referring to the Illinois senator’s comment Wednesday that Republicans were trying to scare voters about him because, among other things, “he doesn’t look like all the presidents on the dollar bills and the five-dollar bills.” Meanwhile, some analysts are arguing that the already infamous Britney Spears/Paris Hilton ad was designed to subliminally trigger voter racism.

Panel Cites Rove for Contempt

The House Judiciary Committee cited former presidential adviser Karl Rove for contempt of Congress because of his refusal to testify on the politicization of the Justice Department. There’s still plenty of red tape keeping Bush’s Brain from a day of reckoning. A full vote on the citation won’t happen—if it happens at all—until September, and by the time the lawyers get involved, George W. Bush will be back in Crawford whacking brush.

Bridge Repairs Going Nowhere

According to an AP review of more than 1,000 structures, just 12 percent of the nation’s most troubled and traveled bridges have been repaired since the deadly collapse of a Minneapolis bridge a year ago. There’s plenty of blame to go around, but most officials seem to agree that the money just isn’t there.

GOP Insiders Slam McCain Ad Attacking Obama’s Celebrity

Several leading Republican strategists, both named and anonymous, were quoted Wednesday as slamming the latest in a string of bold attack ads on Barack Obama, this one overlaying images of the young senator with troubled trollops Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. “McCain ads are just catch as catch can, one wild swing at Obama after another,” one strategist told the Washington Post

New World Trade Treaty Plowed Under

The World Trade Organization talks in Geneva finally imploded Wednesday, as negotiations over farm subsidies and labor standards collapsed into an immovable standstill between wealthy and poorer countries. The talks, defended heavily by the “developed world,” are seen by critics as an instrument to serve corporate interests.

Chronically Homeless Numbers Down 30%, U.S. Claims

In the face of a U.S. housing crisis and a troubled economy, Bush administration officials claim that the past two years have seen a 30 percent drop in the levels of chronically homeless people, crediting the decrease to a strategy of finding permanent shelter for the long-ignored disabled and addicted.

The Return of Rumsfeld

Is the master of the rhetorical question back? Well, in spirit at least. Truthdig contributor Allen McDuffee warns that a group of Democratic foreign policy hawks is pushing one of Donald Rumsfeld’s big ideas for overhauling the U.S. military. These are the same security-obsessed Democrats, by the way, who helped sell the Iraq war to the American people.

Fighting between rival Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas has led to human rights abuses in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, according to a new report by Human Rights Watch. A Palestinian human rights organization recently drew similar conclusions. Both sides have admitted to at least some of the findings of the report.

War Crimes Tribunal Awaits Karadzic

He is almost unrecognizable in the guise of alternative therapist Dr. Dragan Dabic, but it apparently took more than long hair, a beard and an invented identity to keep former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic’s past from catching up with him.

Alaska Senator’s Home Improvements Lead to Corruption Charges

Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska was indicted Tuesday on seven felony counts in a corruption scandal stemming from some mutual back-scratching he allegedly engaged in with oil service and construction company VECO. The charges against the Republican include secretly accepting renovations to his vacation home in exchange for official favors to VECO.

Massachusetts Scraps Anti-Gay Marriage Law

Back when Mitt Romney was the (allegedly gay-friendly) governor of Massachusetts, he used an obscure 1913 law with racist origins to keep the state from becoming “the Las Vegas of gay marriage.” Bay State lawmakers have just repealed that law, but the new situation in Massachusetts won’t be a first because California already permits same-sex weddings for out-of-state residents.
