Cubans Sneak In During Border Drill at Miami

A huge border enforcement drill involving hundreds of agents chasing make-believe migrants on the Miami shoreline proved to be hugely successful for some 40 actual Cuban refugees Thursday.  Two incoming boatloads squeaked by the “Operation Vigilant Sentry” squads, including one group of 21 that came ashore at a nudist beach.

Petraeus’ Iraq Plan:  Finesse, Not Just Force

More American troops are being deployed to hot spots of insurgent activity near Baghdad, Gen. David Petraeus announced Thursday.  Petraeus, just beginning his tenure as U.S. military commander in Iraq, called for future negotiations with anti-government groups as well as those in support of the new Iraqi regime.

Wikipedia Changes Policy After Poster Is Exposed

The popular online encyclopedia Wikipedia, which draws its content from countless anonymous contributions, will institute safeguards following revelations about the identity of one of its most industrious contributors. Ryan Jordan, under the name “Essjay,” wrote thousands of articles for the site while claiming to be a theology professor but was exposed by The New Yorker as a 24-year-old college dropout.

Escalating the Surge

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the Pentagon has agreed to a request from our man in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, to send an additional 2,200 military police. Gates said the number would not count against the 21,500 combat troops or the 2,400 support troops Bush plans to send. Earlier, Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England said the number of support troops could jump to 7,000.

House Dems Agree to Timetable

The Democratic leadership in the House hopes to attach a timetable for withdrawal to an upcoming Iraq war spending bill. The most ardent war opponents have expressed dissatisfaction that the language is not unconditional, but Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., a prominent withdrawal advocate, said “you’ll see basically what I wanted to do….”

House Majority Leader Wants Ethics Investigation

Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., has said there should be an ethics investigation of improper behavior related to the politically motivated firing of eight U.S. attorneys. The Senate is already conducting an inquiry into the matter, which involves at least three prominent Republicans in Congress.
