Bad News About Global AIDS Rate

A top Israeli education official has authorized a textbook for exclusive use in Arab Israeli schools that tells a different side of the story of Israel’s creation in 1948.  For starters, the text acknowledges that Palestinians dubbed the historical event “al nakba” (the catastrophe).

A Female President for India

Pratibha Patil defeated incumbent Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in a governmental election for the presidency, making her the first female president of India.  Her election to the post is in keeping with an Indian tradition of using the presidency to give a “high-profile voice to disadvantaged communities,” according to the Associated Press.

More Trouble for Musharraf

Pakistan’s Supreme Court delivered a ruling Friday that smacks of a smackdown between the country’s other top legal players and President Pervez Musharraf, and in this round, Musharraf didn’t win:  The court flouted Musharraf’s decision, made earlier this year, to suspend Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry (pictured) and voted that he be reinstated to his post.

Bush Clarifies Official Position on Torture (Kind of)

Were the CIA to potentially, maybe, have a detention and interrogation program it would now have to adhere to President Bush’s new executive order prohibiting cruel and inhuman treatment of detainees. It’s still unclear whether water-boarding remains on the menu.

Plame’s Lawsuit Dismissed by Federal Judge

Valerie Plame’s lawsuit against Vice President Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, “Scooter” Libby and Richard Armitage for allegedly conspiring to leak her identity as a CIA operative was dismissed on “jurisdictional grounds” without comment by U.S. District Judge John D. Bates on Thursday.
