A three-meter-long white pointer shark swallowed an Australian diver headfirst, up to his torso, only to discover that it couldn’t stand the taste. The dissatisfied shark then spat out Eric Nerhus, who experts believe was mistaken for a seal.

The U.S. military says a series of 52 operations over 45 days led to the capture of some 600 militants and 16 leaders of Moqtada al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army. With some estimates placing the size of the Shiite militia at 60,000, that leaves only 59,384 to go.

A traveler in Australia was stopped at an airport boarding gate when the attendant saw his T-shirt, which had an image of George W. Bush and the words “World’s #1 Terrorist.” Allen Jasson was told the shirt was offensive and a security threat and was asked to remove it. He didn’t, saying he would rather defend free speech than his airline fare.

Although 3,200 additional troops have been deployed in Baghdad in an effort to assert control, violence continues to worsen. A double car bombing on Monday killed 88 people and injured 160. This does not bode well for a full-blown surge.
