Israeli Bombing ‘Broke U.S. Arms Deal Terms’

A preliminary investigation by the State Department has found that Israel’s cluster bombing of civilian areas of Lebanon violated terms of an arms agreement with the United States.  Israel receives roughly $2 billion annually in military assistance from the U.S., but Washington places classified conditions on how American munitions can be used.

Pentagon Understates War’s Human Cost Among Soldiers

The Pentagon lists the number of soldiers wounded in combat in Iraq at more than 23,000, a tally often quoted by news agencies. But if one considers troops injured in “noncombat action,” a separate category that includes noncombat helicopter crash victims, the critically ill and others, the number doubles to about 50,000, leading critics to charge that the military is attempting to conceal the true human cost of the war.

250 Dead After Daylong Battle

U.S. and Iraqi soldiers killed 250 militants Sunday in a day of fighting in Najaf. According to an Iraqi official, the battle with the previously unknown militia involved tanks, jets and helicopters, one of which was shot down.

The turmoil in Gaza continues unabated as the two main Palestinian factions clash.  At least 22 deaths have occurred since Thursday. Despite pleas for restraint from throughout the Arab world, the fighting between Fatah and Hamas looks as though it could escalate, spreading to the West Bank.

No iPods for North Korea

In response to North Korea’s nuclear test last year, the U.S. has banned the export of luxury goods including iPods, jet skis and cognac. That’ll teach ‘em.
