The Queen Gets Her Revenge

Queen Elizabeth began a toast on Tuesday by teasing the president: “I wondered whether I should start this toast saying I was here in 1776, but I don’t think I will.” Though she has since departed our shores, the British monarch is not done teaching Americans a lesson—her carbon footprint for the trip will be calculated and matched with a donation to an environmental charity.

Bush and Dems Struggle Over the ‘Surge’

The Pentagon has told more than 35,000 troops that they could be headed to Iraq in the fall in order to maintain the “surge.” Meanwhile, House Democrats may decide to fund the war in two-month spurts, with an opportunity to cut off funding in July. The Senate will likely have to pursue a different strategy (see below).

Democrats Will Try Again to End War Funding

Sen. Russ Feingold, Majority Leader Harry Reid and eight other Senate Democrats have decided to respond to Bush’s veto with an amendment that would halt war funding if troops were not safely withdrawn from Iraq by March 31, 2008. Exceptions would include operations against terrorist organizations, training for Iraqi soldiers and protection of U.S. infrastructure and personnel.

Hamas Targets Kids With Islamist Mickey Mouse

The Palestinian militant group Hamas has created its own version of Mickey Mouse, known as “Farfour,” to indoctrinate the next generation with such life lessons as “laying the foundation for a world led by Islamists.” TV show host Farfour has outraged Israel and rival faction Fatah, but the Walt Disney Co. has yet to comment.

6 Children Killed by Helicopter Attack, Iraqi Says

An Iraqi police officer says six children were killed when a U.S. helicopter returned fire near an Iraqi school in Diyala province, near the Iranian border. The military was unable to confirm the report but said it was investigating.

China and Russia Deny Involvement in Darfur Genocide

Amnesty International has accused China and Russia of violating a U.N. arms embargo against Sudan. The human rights organization says the weapons end up in Darfur, where they are used against civilians in the ongoing genocide. The two Security Council members deny any wrongdoing.

Northern Ireland Chooses Peace

The heads of Northern Ireland’s main Protestant and Catholic political parties have joined together in an historic power-sharing government. Ian Paisley, leader of an anti-Catholic church, and Martin McGuinness, formerly of the IRA, will lead the new government. Both men have spent time in prison for their extremist roles in the conflict.
