McCain’s Attention Deficit

While the spotlight is starting to singe the Democrats, it’s true that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have gotten heaping doses of attention compared with the supposed media darling, John McCain. Here’s one indication: The covers of Time and Newsweek have featured the face of an Obama or a Clinton eight times since Super Tuesday.

Decision on Bears: Bush Is on the Clock

George Bush’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hasn’t been the most proactive defender of the environment. The agency has been avoiding a decision on the fate of the polar bear since 2005, but a federal judge has just ordered the administration to officially classify the world’s largest land predator endangered or not by May 15.

Clinton Gains in North Carolina

A new poll shows Hillary Clinton closing the gap in North Carolina, a state that has been firmly in Barack Obama’s corner for weeks. According to the survey, Clinton has made gains among white voters, which many will doubtlessly attribute to the re-emergence of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. The race remains tight in Indiana.

Bush Passes the Buck

Why is it that the U.S. economy is on a serious downswing? Could it be that we’re in the midst of a super-expensive war with little sign of scaling down in the near future that has jacked up oil prices to new heights and strained the federal budget? According to Bush, he’d have worked out our economic woes if it weren’t for those meddling congressional Democrats.

Progressive Jews Fight Back

There’s a new Jewish lobby in town, one that hopes to reclaim American Jews’ proud progressive tradition and counter the right-wingers who have managed to intimidate Washington in the name of the Jewish community. Unlike like-minded advocacy groups, J Street hopes to raise gobs of money in order to support lawmakers who take a more enlightened view, including a call for a more peaceful approach to American and Israeli foreign policy.

Hitchens Asks the $3-Trillion McCain Question

All right, people, it’s high time someone dealt squarely with this question: Does John McCain have anger-management issues? Monday brought word on this potential problem, the Republican Party’s sword of Damocles, from provocateur Christopher Hitchens, who dares to ask “whether [McCain’s] elevator goes all the way to the top.”

Obama Pulls Ahead in Senate Support Race

The competition between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton to win their Senate colleagues’ endorsements is still very close, but Obama moved one notch ahead of Clinton Monday with the addition of Sen. Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico to his list of supporters, which has now grown to 14.

China Factory Made ‘Free Tibet’ Flags

We ran a cartoon a few days ago that showed a Chinese factory churning out “free Tibet” gear. That imaginary image has since become real. The Chinese government has discovered a factory in Guangdong that mass-produced thousands of “free Tibet” flags, which Chinese authorities fear will soon end up on the streets of Hong Kong as the Olympic torch makes its way there.

Rubber-Stamping ‘Failed’ Iraq Projects

The special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction has found a disturbing trend among Iraq rebuilding projects. Far too often, when work is incomplete, U.S. officials will revise or “descope” the terms of the contract to list the project as completed. One example: A $35-million children’s hospital in Basra that is marked completed despite the fact that it’s only 35 percent up and running.

Obama and the Other Clinton

Ryan Lizza in The New Yorker quotes a Bill Clinton aide explaining why there has been so much tension between the former president and Barack Obama: “I think this campaign has enraged him. ... He doesn’t like Obama.” Why? Here’s one theory: While Hillary Clinton has adopted her husband’s legacy, Barack Obama has been assailing it.
