Democrats Issue First Subpoenas

As expected, the House Judiciary Committee issued subpoenas Thursday as part of an investigation into the Justice Department’s alleged partisan abuse of U.S. attorneys. The decision marks the first time Democrats have exercised their reclaimed subpoena power. Chairwoman Linda Sánchez called the move a “last resort.”

Australian Held at Gitmo Will Be Tried in U.S. Court

An Australian imprisoned at Guatanamo Bay for the last five years will be the first Gitmo prisoner to be tried under a new U.S. law authorizing special military trials of alleged enemy combatants.  An initial hearing will be held within the month for 31-year-old David Hicks, accused of helping the Taliban combat American troops in Afghanistan.

Padilla Trial to Go Forward

Jose Padilla has been ruled competent to stand trial, a rebuke to his lawyers.  The defense had sought to have him treated for PTSD before the trial began. Padilla has been held in isolation for three and a half years, during which time he was subjected to varying kinds of interrogation and, very likely, torture.

Staff Sgt. Eric Alva, the first Marine to receive a critical injury in Iraq, has become a crusader for gay rights in the military, and he knows exactly how to handle critics: “OK buddy ... you pick up a gun and you go fight in Iraq or Afghanistan for a while, then you could come back and we can have a talk because I’ve actually sacrificed, I’ve actually done duty and served in this country for your rights and freedom.”
