Gen. Pace Not Sorry For Anti-Gay Slur

Gen. Peter Pace took his boot out of his mouth long enough to refuse to apologize for, and instead to reiterate, his anti-gay statements in today’s Chicago Tribune.  While Pace allowed that he should have just signaled his support for the government’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy instead of focusing on his “personal moral views,” he didn’t retract his claim that homosexuality is “immoral.”

Viacom’s $1B YouTube Smackdown

YouTube, you’re on notice!  Viacom put a damper on the Google-YouTube honeymoon by slapping the online video giant with a $1-billion lawsuit Tuesday.  The suit follows YouTube’s previous tussles with Viacom, the parent company of the MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central networks, over unauthorized Web use of clips from shows such as “The Colbert Report” and “South Park.”

Dems Back Down on Iran

House Democrats have agreed to drop a provision from an upcoming war spending bill that would have required congressional approval before the president could declare war on Iran. The legislation, if it survives a veto, would still demand the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq by Sept. 1, 2008.

Army Surgeon General Kevin C. Kiley has resigned, the third military official to lose his job in the Walter Reed scandal. An anonymous defense official says Kiley was asked to step down by the acting Army secretary, who got his job only two weeks ago after another abrupt dismissal.

Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., the No. 3 Democrat in the Senate, said Sunday that Alberto Gonzales should step down “for the sake of the nation.” Schumer pointed to the partisan firing of U.S. attorneys and the FBI’s abuse of the Patriot Act as evidence that the Justice Department has become highly politicized under Gonzales’ leadership.

Pilgrims Killed in Baghdad Blast

Yet another deadly attack on Iraqi pilgrims underscored the importance of this weekend’s talks between international officials about insurgent violence in Iraq.  A suicide bomber in Baghdad on Sunday targeted a truck carrying Shiites going home from a pilgrimage, leaving 19 dead and 25 wounded.
