Truthdig was founded five years ago to provide a model of accurate, credible and progressive journalism on the Internet at a time when mainstream media was in meltdown. Truthdig’s wide range of original reporting, commentary, in-depth analysis, news summaries, videos, podcasts, reviews and political cartoons helps fill the void created by the collapse of traditional media. This work has been enjoyed by our more than 50 million readers and recognized in winning many national and local journalism awards, including three Webbys for best political blog. Most recently, Truthdig Editor Robert Scheer received the Society of Professional Journalists’ Distinguished Work in New Media Award for using “the new media’s unique characteristics and capabilities while striving to uphold traditional journalism’s highest standards of honesty, accuracy, responsibility and accountability.” Our new nonprofit, The Future of Journalism Foundation, will uphold those values through a mentor program using veteran reporters to train a new generation of journalists in exploiting the enormous potential of the Internet to save democracy by informing the public, with integrity.
