New and Improved Comments

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

John,

That is a good point, and I was surprised to learn a 25 year old officer acquaintance of mine was making $125,000 per year at the gig.  Not to mention the real mercenaries, the private “contractors”.  Nevertheless, I think a lot of the grunts in there had no idea what they were getting into and would not be there with out our warmongering sleazeball MIC and politicians.  Bradley Manning comes to mind as an example that does not fit the paid killer profile.  At any rate, Mr. Fish is not likely getting gooey over them so much as he is pointing out the hypocrisy of us celebrating independence while we occupy and control others.

What Americans should have is a “Dominance Day,” because that is what America
is and always has been about - dominating as much of the world as possible.  It’s
called “Manifest Destiny.”  The trouble is that we don’t have enough soldiers
willing to die in order to enforce American economic hegemony.  That is why we
have turned over much of the job to bloodthirsty, hired killers, like Blackwater,
who are more than willing - they are eager - to kill as many men, women, and
children (preferably non-Christian) as possible.  And we citizens offer no objection
to using our tax dollars to pay them well.  This is common knowledge around the
world.  Only in America are people deluded into believing that the mission of our
military is to protect the citizens of the U.S.  Everywhere else people know that our
800+ bases are in their countries to assert American corporate superiority.  That is
what is our politicians mean by “American exceptionalism.”

They CHOSE to be there! Yes, I served ‘67-69. These aren’t soldiers they are
mercenaries. Let’s not get all gooey about these paid murderers. They certainly
aren’t my troops. I never authorized the USA to invade and colonize Middle
Eastern lands.
