I guess pretending the president is a poor negotiator (but on our side) makes for a better joke than the simple truth.
Still it strikes me that if you replace Obama with “Obama supporters” or “progressives” as the naive trusting idiot who keeps getting their ass kicked you could run a perfectly truthful version of this cartoon.

The republican extremists in congress are the best thing that ever happened for Obama. He only has to stay a baby-step to the left of them in order to seem reasonable. They have made his job so easy that he can remain uninvolved and still look like a fighter for the common man. He didn’t like that shirt anyway. It was given to him by the suckers who voted for him.
