New and Improved Comments

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

Please direct any problems or concerns to us via our contact page.

“What to Do, What to Do?” (p. 7,000,000,000)

Popular Science has been predicting free lunches (of techno-pie-in-the-sky?) for everybody for decades.  Back in the fifties it was “electricity too cheap to meter.”  There were sure to soon be flying cars, jet packs, the “miracle” of chemical agriculture (with food “too cheap” to sell?).

The magazine is a shill for power-mongers, helping them to keep those “goal posts” ever receding toward the vanishing horizon.  “jean gerard” should maybe wake-up and smell the stink of ecosystem death beginning to foul even the nostrils of those who’re accustomed to dealing in it from what they were once convinced was a “safe” distance.

Certainly not by the young, Tobysgirl! I am under 30 and have never experienced anything other than lies and being screwed over by the system. I think your 80 year old friend is very much on the mark, and I am preparing for the fact that I will be settling into my autumn years during that time period…

No, those of us [the youth] who are clear sighted have no hope. And actually it is kind of liberating to put hope down. Hope is for tooth fairies, as Joe Bageat put it. Put down hope and it becomes possible to see things as they are and to face them. Not to CHANGE them, mind you, but to face up to reality honestly and to prepare oneself. The only way to live with any dignity is with one’s eyes open, even if what one faces is the collapse of society.

PLEASE!  You pessimists, take a look a Popular Science, July 19 issue.  It breaks my
heart to read you guys in face of what others are doing:

“The Carbon Slayer”  (p. 53)
“Building a Carbon-Neutral Paradise” (p.56)
“Plans for Tomorrow” (p.60)
“A Live-in Power Plant” (p.62)
“Green Dream” (p.72)

Guaranteed to set you thinking!

Well, I’m not an old GUY, but I’ll put my two cents’ worth in. Always good to hear people speak out about overpopulation.

I have an acquaintance in her eighties. She once said to me, “If you think things are bad now, just wait 30 years.” I don’t think she’s far off in her pessimism. I’m not going to argue about the 1960s with anyone, but I remember having genuine hope and optimism (not some crap peddled by a corporate presidential candidate) once upon a time. To have hope in today’s world seems, at best, an act of incredible naivete, something that should only be indulged in by the young.

Steve E we must be rocking in the same chair, I too feel like the last of the natural Free Man! Steve I can sense your sadness which comes from memory of another Time and attitude.Everything is run through or discovered by the Military Empire of America, in greed we bleed. Watching all this go down at our age, is still stressfull. Knowing better makes it worse Steve E, hang in their, the rats are on the way. What do you think will we have to shoot our way out of THIS National MESS, martial law run by corporations is next. Food for guns to disarm America so the people cant defend themselves like Mexico/Canada/Europe. Going down Slow but here to watch the show.

On not taking everybody else down, too:  Fat chance!  Misery not only loves company, it insists on it.  And nothing is “off the table” when it comes to “Les Miserables” getting what they want.

I feel just like you steve e. I try to point out the insanity of a ever
increasing human population, people content to just let the
crooks remain in charge and have their way. At my age, over 60
now, I just look and listen to see what will motivate the people to
some kind of action but I am convinced that if they were, it will
already be too late for there to be any effect. So, just kick back
and see all those selfish and arrogant fools flail about trying to
make something work for themselves. Truly a case of a lack of
‘an ounce of prevention being better than a pound or ton of
cure’.

Yes everything is imploding, bad news everyday. Like rats on a sinking ship,
people don’t have a clue what to do. Mother nature will have the final say. Almost
every problem in the world today is because there are too many of our human
species. We are overpopulated and we can’t stop all the humping and consuming. I
personally don’t give a damn. I’m just content in my old age in believing I might
still be around to watch the demise of civilization as we know it. Get out the
popcorn all you rats.
