New Orleans below sealevel? So what? The whole of Holland (where I live) is below sealevel. Therefore we (the Dutch) consider levees too important to let them build by any armycorps. Why don’t you come over and see how we already more than 1000 years deal with this problem.

This is directed to Frank who answered my comment on The Katrina Disaster. Yes New Orleans is below sea level but what caused the Katrina disaster was not the water from the hurricane but the failure of the levees that were built by the Army Corp of Engineers who might have done a better job of building the levees.
The people of New Orleans love where they live, in fact if more people had a love of place this would be a better world.
The fire in Calif. happens over and over and over, the Santa Ana Winds travel far, they can effect Calif. as far north as Oakland and San Francisco and this I know for a fact because of a fire that almost destroyed a famous hotel in Berkeley.
But since I don’t live in La. anymore rebuilding is not my concern, but some people do want to return home.
Margaret Currey, if private individuals and their insurance companies want to keep rebuilding in California while footing most of the bill, that is their business. If the residents of New Orleans and their insurance companies can’t rebuild without massive federal assistance (over $100 billion by most expert projections), then their choice of location becomes everyone’s business. We should also consider scientist’s long term projections of rising sea levels and more severe storms in the region.
The California wildfire damages, while costly to insurance companies and individuals, are a pittance compared to rebuilding New Orleans in terms of federal tax dollars

There has been comment that New Orleans should not be rebuilt because most of the city is below sea level.
The wildfire disaster in southern calif. happens almost every year and still the people go back and rebuild so should the people of New Orlelans be able to rebuild, the weather did not do New Orleans in because hurricanes do not always hit New Orleans, what caused the problem was the people who built the leevies and that would be The ArmyCorps of Engineers.
The real reason that the government did not help the people is 1. The governor and mayor were democrats and power in Washington, D.C. is Republician the people in New Orleans are mostly poor.
Now a new disaster and Bush is right on the scene, the real reason is most of the people are well to do and most of them will vote Republician.
Another thing about the disaster in New Orleans is it happened during a long holiday weekend, and when this happens most government employees take off on Thursday sometimes Wednesday and come back to work on Tuesday but usually Wednesday. The bottom line is most employees were out of touch with what was going on in the region including the President.
