Granted, Couric often comes off as having an upstairs apartment for rent, particularly when conducting an interview, but I could name plenty of men, mostly on cable but equally well known, with less talent and a much greater penchant for editorializing straight news (and not nearly as ‘perky’, either!)
This is what we have and will continue to get from a corporate media with policies now allowing the board room control over their newsrooms...something Americans deserve by handing ratings not to the journalists covering the issues that truly affect our lives, but rather the ones dishing up hours of non-stop trashy celebrity gossip and similar fluff, one reason we’re high on the list of countries with the most poorly informed citizens. A profit driven fourth estate and a profit driven health care system do not best serve the people, but it’s pretty obvious we’re getting what we asked for.
By the way, Mr. Luckovich, 2 cartoons back was another of yours, also trashing a woman by questioning her intelligence and suitability for a job. Hillary may not be your cup of tea, but she is certainly a very capable and intelligent woman. Small dick, or just a run of the mill misogynist?

Gwen Ifil would make a really great anchor, she is smart and well educated, but of course if that happened then the news that shows only a certain look would change.
The only person who is seen by people early in the morning is Michelle Miller, who is married to Marc Morial who was mayor before Ray Nagin, for some peoples information New Orleans has had five democrats in a row, Marc Morial’s father was also Mayor of New Orleans, Mary Landrau’s father also was mayor of New Orleans.

Katie Couric’s unfortunate failure should not dissuade networks from hiring female anchors. I nominate Gwen Ifill, who has both Couric’s charm and Williams’ gravitas. She also showed uncommon courage, when she chastised Tim Russert for not confronting Don Imus’ boorish and racist behavior over the years.

She was never really cut out for that kind of broadcast, anyway. Do I need to point out that she is no Walter Chronkite or Peter Jennings? She is attractive, energetic (apparently, she hates to be called “perky.")
She did lively interviews on the Today show (remember her comments to the navy seals, a clip of which was shown in “Farenheit 911”, of her telling them that they “rocked”?), but that doesn’t qualify her to be sitting in the same chair as was held by the other two gentlemen.
The nightly evening network newscast will likely be a casualty of the Internet, and the 24-hour cable news outlets (a shame, because the latter operate at such a level of sleaze, look at what CNN has become...and MSNBC and Fox News...does one need further comment?
The network news division really did hold a distinction in times past (and, yes, they were anchored exclusively by white men). And times, fortunately, do change. But putting someone like Couric in the slot, just BECAUSE she is a women, and an attractive, familiar face on a morning interview program...well, you see the results.
CBS is reaping what they should have never sown in the first place…

The decision to hire Couric had nothing to do with advancing women in network news. It had to do with advancing entertainment in network news.

Once a cheerleader always a cheerleader. How the hell do you expect a f**king perky bitch like Couric to have the depth to deliver importatant news.
