C.J.,
Your pseudo psychological analysis,  is evidently more of a self-analysis projecting your own anxieties—-no one is criticizing Fish’s talent as an artist, we all know he is incredibly skillful; but you sound like the president of his fan club; please don’t become a “crazy bitch” and stalk him wearing a diaper.

My comments represented my reaction to the implications inferred by Fish’s comments and I never “presumptuously” stated that I represent the entire female population.

On the other hand, your analysis is not only illogical but insufferable:  “Poor Billy, indeed! In the event he was subjected to the “news,” but even if he wasn’t; he’s subject to stuff over and over during the process of being socialized to become a “man.”) Both genders’ sexual fantasies are, as all know, to be heatedly denied by liberals and conservatives alike, though somewhat less so by conservatives, who are hypocritical only in public.”

C.J. let’s hope that you are not a practicing psychotherapist, your views would cause your neurotic patients to become psychotic.

And C.J.’S compatriot Rhonda states:  “Nowak’s pathetic saga is a lesson to any girls and their mothers who think that brains will automatically give you self esteem, ”  oh,  what does that imply, if Nowak was an ignorant uneducated woman she would be much happier and would not have fallen prey to Billy.  I’m not an expert in Ballroom dancing, but it usually takes two to Tango.

Everyone knows that each persons self-esteem is created by a complex group of circumstances.  However, Rhonda,  a key factor in building self-esteem in both men and women is the confidence achieved through the acquisition of skills and knowledge.

As a child of the early sixties who couldn’t be torn from the set whenever anything about any of the Mercury Seven came on, I can relate to the image Mr Fish has drawn.  The space program and its brave heros were all I thought about, period.

I’ve since grown and know my heros were still just men, after all.  But that has never tarnished the dream of wanting to promote and experience the best that is in all of us, male or female.

So, while I was saddened and sickened by this unfortunate incident, I couldn’t stop laughing over this cartoon.  It was a cathartic release and hilariously cute.  It helps us to see that yes, astronauts are people, too.  I hope she will get the help she needs and wish the best for her.  Now let’s get on with the rest of our lives, shall we?

How compassionless and gleeful the liberal blogs and websites have shown themselves over this incident. How wonderful to put down the woman and one who has to wear a diaper!  Really cruel. Is Mr. Fish satirizing male fantasies or celebrating them?  It seems to me the joke is at the woman’s expense, the young male adopting irony to maintain his superiority.  All the fakery about astronauts as celebrities is a smokescreen for old-fashioned misogyny.  There is rarely any compassion for a woman in this ugly world.  How very droll, indeed.  The world has far too many Huds, all too ready to put all their “inferiors” in their place and explain it all to them.  Enough with the hypocrisy.  Talk about self-deception.

The cartoon is hilarious and so true!

Nowak’s pathetic saga is a lesson to any girls and their mothers who think that brains will automatically give you self esteem.  Here’s a brilliant woman making an ass out of herself and destroying her career over a jerk she’s let become an obsession.

She deserves ridicule and girls need to see her being ridiculed.  Unlike Nowak, maybe they’ll growup and get some perspective on things.  Like, he’s just not that into you.

Okay, I didn’t read all the comments because I had to say something about the bottom few.

To Mr. Ron:
Your pathetic attempt to belittle the people who do find this comic funny by using big words to make yourself seem so bloody high and mighty is just sad.

To Ms. Feminist:
“The fact that she was a super-intelligent woman helped to craft a more sensational story, bringing out the worst in us, by being a bit too gleeful at her undoing.”
Wooh… where do I start?  First of all, “the man” is not trying to tear down your existance and put you in a kitchen so relax for a second.  This comic and the media attentio that sparked it was not meant to cut down all women and make the public eye see “you all” as “hysterical crazy female"s but you sure are doing a good job yourself.  When did all women meet together and decide that you could speak for them?  I am referring to your use of the word “us” when referring to all women.  If you want to place some blame on the guy sexing up the ladies we’re gonna have to place some more blame on the ladies getting sexed up.  You should be well aware of the fact that because a man can’t “keep it in his pants” doesn’t mean a woman has to put it in hers.
So before you slam the gavel in your self-righteous fury, try thinking about exactly what you are inferring with your scatter-shot statements.

C’mon on Eleanore and some of the rest of you. It’s not so light or so silly; although, it IS a laugh riot at the same time. This piece, by Mr. Fish, is brilliant: both refreshingly honest and at the same time critical. Poor bastard, Billy, on the verge of becoming a “man” in America, or maybe anywhere else in the Post-Modern world. Damn, it’s not easy, this becoming-a-man thing! I could write 10 pages that would not capture all this illustration says about being of a particular gender at a given time, likely in given culture; namely, in THIS, our culture!

Why else so much focus by media on the fact the vengeful woman was wearing a diaper? The sexual innuendo was, until the death of Ms. Smith blew Ms. Nowak off the front page, rampant in media, to say the least. Nowhere was it spoken out loud, until Mr. Fish here. Some in media (known hereabouts) appeared speaking in heavy-breathing mode. Naturally, the more facts of the case were decried, the more was revealed to anyone paying attention. Shakespeare could hardly have dreamed it up. Now, THIS is tragicomedy.

Mr. Fish’s balloon does not mention Ms. Nowak all. (She is indeed a pathetic case—a mother and wife, and so on.) Because it is not about her specifically. It IS about male sexual fantasy, female too, as engendered by the story of Ms. Nowak, in the minds of lots of men and women. As well as about how sexual fantasy is exploited by media in their never-ending grab for ratings. This is real-life T&A, folks. Media knows a solid T&A story when they spot one, and the fact the perpetrator had donned a diaper was just too good to be true!  The story is not about a female astronaut who fell from grace, but of male-female relations in a tawdry culture wherein both genders live in acute denial.

That the story is also about female sexual fantasy renders it that much more taboo. Wisely, Mr. Fish doesn’t delve into that. Female (and male, of course) anchors were everywhere—almost breathlessly—reporting on the fact Ms. Nowak had worn a diaper on her journey to vengeance. An air of “objectivity” was decorously maintained, of course. Well, EXCEPT for the fact none could stop talking about the damn DIAPER! Poor Billy, indeed! In the event he was subjected to the “news,” but even if he wasn’t; he’s subject to stuff over and over during the process of being socialized to become a “man.”) Both genders’ sexual fantasies are, as all know, to be heatedly denied by liberals and conservatives alike, though somewhat less so by conservatives, who are hypocritical only in public. They are not so hypocritical as self-righteous liberals whose idea of feminism is that both genders should live in states of psychological self-denial while economic discrimination continues in the workplace. (Yes, it’s true: Conservatives have a better time in bed, probably gay conservatives too, then do liberals. Oh no! Really? Yes, really. Ahem…I’m one radical leftist, who’s straight, who’s in a position to know.)

What we need—men and women—is to refuse more and deny less. That might mean the death of mainstream media as we’ve come to know it. The comments I’ve read here amount to nothing more than denial. Refusal is not to be read. Refusal would amount to not pretending, while denial—ideology on a societal level—leads to neurosis, which is then exploited by whatever and whomever. Talk about adding insult to injury!

The politics of gender don’t apply only to women, ya’ll know? Thus, Mr. Fish’s bit is brilliant, as noted, and either you get it or you don’t. If you don’t, you’re hopelessly naive or engaged in some considerable self-deception, especially if you’re male. I’d only add that Mr. Fish demonstrated a pair in putting THIS out there! Congrats to him for getting to the bottom-line? And to Truthdig for publishing.

P.S. Wonderfully drawn, Mr. Fish.

Boys don’t think about stuff like that.  He’s thinking about his new XBox and why his erection won’t go away.  And, if it doesn’t, he’ll make bad decisions someday just like poor Nowak and millions of other people do, just about every hour.  Let’s get a life.

I find that I agree with all parties in this Digg.I think that the cartoon is great,- but, Yes it is sad how this super woman has destroyed her life in one fell swoop. I am really bothered by the whole thing for some reason. Yes I agree with the whole of all the political comments made as well, but there is a strange human element that really gets ones attention here. I think that the male counterpart here is a scum as well, being a former pilot, not millitary, but having been around many fighter pilot types, this is not out of sync with the macho, gunslinger attitude. I think this guy was probably entertaining several of these relationships. It just goes to show that the “Pocket Rocket” is more powerful than the one sitting on the florida lunch pad!

Let’s keep the real comment in mind here.  I see this as a comment on the ridiculous elevation of astronauts and the silly endevor in which they participate.  Billy could just as easily be dreaming of becoming a professional athelete, a rapper or movie star.  All America’s gladiators.  Aren’t they just amazing, special, best-of-the-best?  No, of course not.  What is the actual difference between astronauts and NASCAR drivers?

Who are our societies royalty?  Why?  How could one of these incredibly special people act like a mere mortal and go a little crazy?

The woman is sick.  It’s rotten to kick her when she’s down.  It’s hardly a new concept, in fact, it’s as old as dirt.  Just to pin it down, it’s called having some respect - for others and for ourselves.  One shows some respect to others expecting that they might receive some as well; conduct reflecting the kind of world they wish to live in, and that the world is what one makes of it every step of the way.  That being said, sometimes we lash out at the injustices we see with hard irony and sarcasm, to shine a bright light on what offends us.  So how exactly does it offend us that a mother of three could not cope, became sick, faces criminal charges, and may lose her children who don’t have their mother right now? And the casual use of the word bitch has truly become as tedious as it is low.

“Out of a sense of decency and empathy for her three children, is such gleeful moral
superiority and sexist tripe really that funny?”

Ron,
I totally agree—it is absolutely nauseating how everyone was just a bit to eager to ridicule and mock this accomplished woman.

It was especially upsetting, to see the liberal MSM take a joyful delight in her demise, further stereotyping the image of the “hysterical crazy female.”  The fact that she was a super-intelligent woman helped to craft a more sensational story, bringing out the worst in us, by being a bit too gleeful at her undoing.

It is interesting that the press is not scrutinizing William Oefelein with the same vigor—a divorced father of three and, someone who certainly seems to be a “creep.”  He was having an affair with Lisa Nowak, a married woman with three young children, and also having a sexual relationship with Colleen Shipman, another young astronaut.  Perhaps if Oefelin, had kept his pants on at work, none of this would have happened—-surely he bears some responsibility.

This tragic story gave me no pleasure—it would better serve the liberal MSM, if they kept their eyes on the prize, and used their energies and talents to scrutinize the corrupt politicians in the White House.

My god the world has become so savage. And the social Darwinistic pleasure we take in other people’s downfalls is nauseating, if not indicative of our own diminished state of grace.

And how callow is it to make fun of diapers. He he he… The level of insanity and desperation this woman exhibited should be a cause for concern not ridicule, especially for the sake of her children.

Your humor and insensitivity is as sick as her actions…Mr. Fish.
