New and Improved Comments

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

Please direct any problems or concerns to us via our contact page.

Look at this poll:

http://www.pollingreport.com/terror.htm

Then tell me Democrats have nothing to worry about. The ‘War on Terror’ (or, as the Pentagon is reported to have renamed it, ‘The Long War’), and Americans support for it, these are the basis for Repubs. political strategy. This is all they have got, boys and girls, the Repubs. only ace, their only support point with a significant number of the American electorate. Let me emphasize, they have nothing else left. So, go ahead, let your imagination run a little and think what the real players in all this, desperate for a Republican hold on power, will be willing to do for an election victory in 2006.

Most importantly, think about who they are and what is really at stake. What would happen, for example, if Dems. got control of one house of Congress and started investigations into the Bush admin.? Think about the supeanaed witnesses forced to testify before a congressional committee. Think about who those witnesses might be.

Yes, there is lots to think about: $8 billion unaccounted for in Iraq; accounting for use of funds in general; think about the ‘follow the money’ investigations possible: how about the ‘faith-based’ money flow?

Think about the corporate interests in all this and that money flow tied to the U.S. Government. Do you think maybe there is a possible investigation there?

Now, think about this. The Democrats are as tied to the corporate money sources as are the Republicans. You may say, “What about the huge internet-based fund raising capability demonstrated in the last election? Doesn’t that free up Democratic politicians from feeling the need to beg for corporate-connected money?”

Well, indeed, if you were to ask such a question, I would have to reply that I do not know. But I suspect that if the Democrats regain power, they will do whatever is to their perceived political advantage, whatever that may be and to wherever that my lead.

I suspect that a thorough study of the matter would show that the problems for the human race from the beginning of recorded history, and the basis for all human suffering caused by other human beings, this cause, I say, will be found in politics and the machinations of politicians of every stripe. This is our real problem.
