About the Author

Deanne Stillman’s latest book is the "Desert Reckoning: A Town Sheriff, a Mojave Hermit, and the Biggest Manhunt in Modern California History," based on her Rolling Stone article, "The Great Mojave Manhunt," which was a finalist for a PEN journalism award and appears in "Best American Crime Writing 2006." Publisher's Weekly calls it "a beautifully written, humane book" and Kirkus Reviews describes it as "lyrical and intense." In addition, Rolling Stone has named it as a "must-read for the summer." In addition, she has written the widely acclaimed "Mustang: The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West," a Los Angeles Times "Best Book of '08," winner of the California Book Award silver medal for nonfiction, and recipient of great reviews in the Atlantic Monthly, Economist, Orion, NPR’s On Point, and may other publications. A chapter of "Mustang" is currently in development for a film starring Wendie Malick. Deanne is also author of "Twentynine Palms: A True Story of Murder, Marines, and the Mojave," which Hunter Thompson called "A strange and brilliant story by an important American writer." It was an L.A. Times bestseller and “Best Book ’01,” is included in college literary nonfiction courses around the country and is now out in a new, updated edition. Deanne’s work is widely anthologized, and her plays have won prizes in festivals around the country. She is a member of the core faculty at the UC Riverside-Palm Desert Low Residency MFA Creative Writing Program. Follow Deanne Stillman on Facebook.
