How the Shutdown Disproportionately Affects the Poor

As negotiations stall, the partial shutdown of the U.S. government has entered its third day, leaving more than 800,000 federal workers furloughed and numerous governmental programs on pause. For example, as many as 19,000 children have already lost access to Head Start.
Additionally, many recipients of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children will lose assistance. On “Democracy Now!” on Thursday, Imara Jones of Colorlines.com looked at who is being hardest hit by the shutdown.
