‘Daily Show’: John Oliver Mocks Royals, CNN After Kate Middleton Gives Birth
Posted on Jul 24, 2013
Temporary “Daily Show” host John Oliver may be British, but that doesn’t mean he was about to go soft on the monarchy after the newest royal was born earlier in the week. Oliver let loose with the criticism on Tuesday’s night show, skewering the family (even asking at one point how inbred the members were), the queen herself and the hullabaloo surrounding the birth of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s son.
Midway through the opening segment, when Oliver “revealed” that a golden easel outside Buckingham Palace that displayed the royal birth announcement was also traditionally used to hold the nude portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (think the queen’s face transposed onto Kate Winslet’s body in the famous drawing from the film “Titanic”), Oliver said, “I think legally I can still be killed for that.”
Oliver then did Jon Stewart proud when he mocked one of the on-hiatus host’s favorite targets for its ridiculous, over-the-top coverage of the royal birth: CNN (because fans of “The Daily Show” wouldn’t expect anything less by now). As Oliver noted, before the birth, the cable news network had been reduced to “bothering pregnant British ladies.”
One reporter even interviewed an expectant mother in a British hospital’s delivery room after she had just been given some laughing gas. The woman told the CNN reporter that although it’s called laughing gas, it doesn’t make you laugh and that “nothing is funny now.”
Responded Oliver: “Really? Nothing is funny? Not even the spectacle of a once-great news organization reduced to shoving microphones in the faces of women in labor? Cause that seems giggle-worthy to me.”
