Colbert Praises Russia’s ‘Anti-Gay Pride’
Posted on Nov 21, 2013
The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, have become increasingly controversial because of the country’s legislation banning anyone attending the February games from “promoting” gay rights. As a response, many international athletes and supporters have vocalized their plans to dissent by wearing rainbow pins, but Russia had something else up its sleeve.
“Yeah, we took your rainbow. Suck it gays! Just ... don’t do it in Russia,” shouts Stephen Colbert, celebrating the decision to make Winter Olympics volunteers in Sochi wear overtly colorful uniforms, ostensibly to draw attention away from those protesting the draconian anti-gay laws.
Colbert explains in his Sport Report segment the genius behind the plan: When someone spots a person in rainbow clothing while watching the games this winter, “they won’t think they’re a gay protester, they’ll just think they have terrible taste.”
