Corddry: Unsure if Allen’s Racism Helps or Hurts Him

Jon Stewart asked “Daily Show” correspondent Rob Corddry if Virginia Sen. George Allen had damaged his image by using a racial slur to describe a young campaign worker. Corddry: “I don’t know what ‘macaque’ means, but it sure as sh—sounds racist. And … here in Virginia, I’m still not sure if that helps or hurts a guy.”

Stewart: George Allen was pointing out that his opponent in the Senate race, James Webb, sent someone to videotape all of George Allen’s appearances.

Which is not a very nice thing to do, because George Allen says some really stupid sh—. Like, let’s all welcome Macaque here to America. In George Allen’s defense, he didn’t know that the gentleman was already a citizen and didn’t need to be welcomed to America, or that his name wasn’t Macaque—but S.R. Sidarth. Which I just assumed George Allen assumed looked Macaquish.

Stewart: Rob Corddry covers the Allen campaign for us in Richmond.

Stewart: This was a real incident on Allen’s campaign. Was there any long-term effect to what he said?

Corddry: Well, between you and me, I don’t know what ‘Macaque’ means, but it sure as sh—sounds racist. And John, here in Virginia, I’m still not sure if that helps or hurts a guy.
