Thousands of Egyptians have taken to the streets to protest a referendum planned for Saturday on a new constitution promoted by Islamist President Mohamed Morsi that would give Muslim clerics a role in shaping laws.

The opposition wants a charter guaranteeing safeguards for minority rights, including for women and the 10 percent of Egyptians who are Christian. Morsi’s supporters claim the new constitution is necessary to preserve the revolution and continue the transition to democracy.

“Democracy Now!” correspondent Sharif Abdel Kouddous reports on the struggle from the streets of Cairo, where protesters have moved toward government buildings.
