The Ghost of Joseph McCarthy Slithered Into the RoomPosted on Apr 28, 2012
Forgotten history is like a rake neglected in the national backyard. Soon enough you’ll return to where you left it, and if you step on its teeth, it’ll swing up and hit you in the face. That’s the gist of a Bill Moyers video essay that compares the political behavior of Florida Congressman Allen West to that of the shamed Sen. Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s. West recently revived McCarthy’s strategy of smearing Democratic Congress members by claiming some of them are undercover communists. (Above, McCarthy, at left, and a caricature of Rep. West.) —ARK Bill Moyers: Advertisement Previous item: Lacking a Corporate Outcry, CISPA Looks Likely to Pass Next item: Mad Cow: Consumer Reports Says Regulators Are Failing the Food Supply New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. Speaking to a Lincoln Day Dinner in West Palm Beach for the Palm Beach

“We need to let President Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, (audience

OZ—depends upon whether the group fit the definition of fascist or was
merely reactionary or very conservative.
There was once a guy named Henry Wallace, who, for a time, edited The New
Republic. He left the magazine to run as a Progressive Party candidate in the
1948 presidential election.
Some folks called HIM a communist, but he was not.
Interestingly, The New Republic didn’t support Wallace’s candidacy….because
the owner of the rag was secretly a communist and Moscow ordered that
Wallace not be supported.
——
In the end, I expect that it’s good for fascists to be identified as such and for
people who ain’t fascists not to be so identified.
there’s a boatload of fools on the left who like to use the term “fascist’ for half
of everybody who aren’t blithely foolish and disagree with the foolishness of
some supposedly “leftish” positions and policies that are anything but
progressive…. and that’s just wrongheaded and ugly.

What the pernicious patriot doesn’t know—although he claims to live inside the heads of all the world leaders and to know more about their motives than they do—is that Bush was referring precisely to the efficient campaign to reduce the population of African-Americans when he said (and I saw him say it on t.v. when I was someplace in the Middle East): “Heckuva job, Brownie. heckuva job.”
Now if Mr. Brown had been Mr. Black, it wouldn’t have been quite so patriotically memorable.

Be honest.

Ozark Michael,
I’ve never heard a senator or representative from the Democratic Party tell an audience of supporters that almost 100 Republican senators and representatives are secretly Nazis.
Though I think there’s a far cry between a Nazi and a communist, there is a difference between public statements by persons in positions of trust, and about other people, and mutual mud-slinging between cronies of the 1% and the rest of the population, and particularly when they’re using “handles” or more-or-less sitting in the peanut gallery.
As for communism and socialism, the dialogue is much more intelligent in Europe. Plenty of people are members of the communist or socialist parties, and no one is shaking in their booties, or feeling compelled to address the subject only on the level of smearing others, and without regard to how poorly the persons smearing don’t even know what they’re talking about, to begin with.
Congress is hardly filled with communists. Only an American with half a brain left after being educated in one of our poorly funded hillbilly schools would think so.
Congress is run by lobbyists working for CORPORATIONS. There are no corporations in communist countries. Corporate control is about fascism.

In one ear we hear of Republicans wanting children and the elderly dead. On the other, tales of conspiracies rooted in one ism or another. Nancy Pelosi and Sarah Palin are both bitches. Bush was illegitimate before inauguration day. So too, it is said, with Obama. Everyone’s a fascist. There’s a great deal of difference between the level and quality of the discourse that Moyers engages in and the sophomoric, shallow, idiotic nonsense vomited-out by the Main Stream Media.
I don’t have a “double standard.” I merely point out that if you have a “position” about the “extremist” views out there in polito-stupido land, you ought to be willing to defend them rather than rank on someone such as Moyers who was actually lived when words mattered, peoples’ lives were ruined and if someone called someone else a commie, it was serious business.
History will show that the “liberal labels” attached to the political Right these days pale in scale and scope compared to the never-ending, 24/7 propaganda being manufactured by the Media.

As to Democrats being Communists? We have a President who is so centerist that he is worthless to reform or change anything. We have Democrats and Republicans who are solidly in the pay of Corporate America and block the voters concerns for abject servitude to the selfishness of Corporate America. Communists, no. Socialists very weak, but most of the good we get from government is Socialist. If you want to play the “both sides do it just the same” game, your task is not to find a blogger who talks about fascism; your task is to find a Democratic member of the House who stands up and says that eighty members of the Republican House caucus are members of the Fascist Party, and who sticks to his guns when questioned about it; your task is also to demonstrate that the Democratic leadership remains silent and does not even try to distance itself from the errant member, much less criticize him.
