Democracy Now!

A service portrait of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr.

The New York Daily News has named Anthony Carelli, a White Plains police officer who stands accused of brutality in an unrelated 2008 case, as the cop who shot and killed 68-year-old black veteran Kenneth Chamberlain Sr. when responding to a false medical alarm at Chamberlain’s home in November 2011.

“Democracy Now!” correspondent Juan Gonzalez was part of the team that broke the story in the Daily News on Wednesday.  —ARK

I commend Mr. Chamberlain Jr. and his calm demeanor and self-possession through this horrible experience.  Very brave what he is doing.  Also the news reporters from Democracy Now! and the attorneys and the former prosecuter interviewed.

The whole description of how the events of that evening unfolded are very believable to me.  It’s a kind of mental illness of authoritarianism where they actually escalate a situation, and when no action is required at all.

They went to a home about a medical issues - and the person and medical center informed them everything was o.k. - yet they enter, and by the time they’ve finished, they’ve killed this man.

Many, many years ago, I spent a portion of my growing up years in Westchester County - and I also lived and worked briefly in the White Plains area as an adult.  The kind of -what I consider - mental illness displayed by authority figures - sounds very much like certain populations of people in that area - the way they are in their personal minds and lives and relationships - and now playing out in this situation where they have police power.

As a teenager in that area, many of the youths knew that the area police departments were very, very, very messed up.  The teen community when I was growing up knew A LOT about what was going on, and was connected with one another, even across the different town lines.

A lot of people said then that the mob was very big in that area.  Probably a number of mobs.  I’m sure it still is.

There are extensive family relationships for many generations, people have many times removed cousins, and they all know each other - or each other’s such and such (grandfather, cousin, sister, 3rd cousin, so on) ... talk talk talk talk talk

The brief time I lived as an adult in White Plains, I never went around the bar scene.  A lot of people said it was a “big meat market.”  Corporate workers picking each other up then for their empty encounters.  Back then, at least.

If One is To Understand How Brutality Progresses One Is to Understand How It Began. Simply Put By White European Standards of Governing a People Becomes Viable For Anything Taxing Etc , This Actually Becoming The Blue Print On How To Control a People By Putting a Person In Armed Control Of Ones Destiny It Can And will Be In Your Power If Need Be . This Intern Makes it The Swine Guards Business To Do as The Romans Did And Silence The Oppressed. Thru Generations of Those Who Benefit From This Type of Government Only Cease To Exist Because it Has To Continue, You Just can’t Live in a world That Is to Be Controlled And Not Kill and Not Put Fear in The Hearts , Strip Them of Gods Earthly Given Right To Exist Peacefully And Benefit From it. Kill Is What the Romans did And from Years Of Practice   Many From Other Lands Have Taken On This Way Of Life In The America’s Today and in Many Lands Over. Silly To Even Think Some Spoiled Cops Trying To Survive Is Gonna Give a dam about Some Kinda Rules When It Works In The Favor Of the Rulers. This isn’t Ever Gonna Stop Until The Righteous Rise Up And Put The Order Of the World In its Rightful Place. Until Then We Have the Worst Of The Worst Kind Who In This Century Show they’re Greed and Lust For Power Domination Money & Dedication To The Powers that Be That they are Faithful Servants of the wicked. Police training Bad Apples And Racist Cops Aren’t The Excuse Or Story. It’s Heritage and Longstanding Traditions period.

I’m all for ReadingJones and favor both of his suggestions. There is another aspect that needs attention also, and that is police training.
When police overreach and brutality becomes as common as it is, that indicates that the police are being subjected to the same poisonous fears that are being exploited in the larger society.  They are being trained to expect and fear violent opposition which quickly escalates their violent response far beyond the need. Since 9/11 a kind of automatic conditioning has occurred throughout the entire society which predisposes all of us to over-reacting. Police are just as subject to that fear as the rest of us, perhaps more so. And that conditioning causes a tendency toward hair-trigger reactions which foreclose on other less aggressive possibilities.
We need our reactions—and the reactions of all public authorities as well—to be disciplined and proportionate to the reality of situations—not to what we think might happen but to what is actually happening.
Violent expectations create violent, destructive confrontations. Police brutality is usually unnecessary, counter-productive, and as socially disruptive as any other crime.

This report clearly illustrates why we need tort
attorneys. They are the only protection we have. That
is why the Predator class and the GOP are so strongly
in favor of “Tort Reform.” Like “Regulatory Reform”
it is not about reform at all, it is about making the
rest of us even more powerless than we are already.

Another lesson that I take from this report is that
every Black home, every Native American home, every
Hispanic home, every Poor White home should install a
life alert type system which will record the actions
and words of home invaders at the command of the home
occupants. The system should be well hidden maybe
even connected by wi-fi to another location entirely.
The initiating command should be by a coded voice
prompt.

Persons of good will who are technically competent
PLEASE help. Google, Anonymous Radio Shack employees
whomever can contribute> Attorneys and politicians
who can protect peoples right to record police
actions are also needed.
