So Long, Dr. Laura: Schlessinger to Leave Radio

Email this item Email    Print this item Print

Dr. Laura
cnn.com

Dr. Laura Schlessinger is still sorry about that whole “n-word” incident from earlier this month. So sorry, in fact, that she went on “Larry King Live” Tuesday night to talk about it—and to announce, “I’ve made the decision not to do radio anymore.”

But she’s not leaving the stage altogether. No, Schlessinger says she’ll be exploring her online and print options and will be freer, and somehow able to “regain” her “First Amendment rights,” without her radio gig—although her host quickly notes that radio is the medium through which she attained her fame. Awkward!

Even better, though, is King’s helpful breakdown of who can, and can’t, employ racial slurs to make their point: “Do you realize that it’s OK if blacks wanna kid blacks or make fun of themselves, but it’s not OK for this lady ... to have a white person use the word?” He even appears to slow down his speech to make sure she gets it.  —KA

“dr.” laura said the word nigger, repeatedly, to a
caller whose complaint was of even the tinge or
suggestion of racial nsensitivity causing her
discomfort.
never mind the jew- what? it’s only a word, only
jews can use that word?- then said ‘don’t go all
naacp on me’.
this harpy, this vicious scold felt wholly entitled
to her outburst, she never missed a beat. she is
merely another remarkably untalented, hateful radio
siren. this society can’t seem to get enough of
them.
on the other hand, the caller has said she had
respected the “dr.” and had sought her “advice”
before, so she can’t be that squeamish.
piffle to both of them.

I’m sure all the righties worked up over Dr. Laura wouldn’t mind in the least if high profile black people started referring to white people as Crackers and Honkies. Hey, it’s Free Speech, a freedom close to the heart of every Republican. After all, Sarah Palin was very tolerant of Rahm Emanuel for his use of the word “retard.”

Yes. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I love how she “apologizes” first, then
launches into a tirade about her First Amendment rights. Hate speech is not
protected by the First Amendment. Just like standing in a crowded theater and
shouting Fire! is not protected speech. This woman has the intellect of a chipmunk
and she has no place in national discourse or debate. I’m not really comfortable
using words that marginalize anyone because by doing so, I’ve made myself feel
icky, and marginalized myself. Crawl into that hole where Anne Coulter lives and
you two can hold hands. Seriously though, both of you need to seek help for your
anorexia. I don’t know if it’s nervosa, or just starving for the camera like the girls
from Melrose Place (original series). Either way, it’s setting a bad example for
people who are watching. Even if they aren’t listening to your trash, they have
to look at your broomstick arms. What if I went on a tirade and mentioned
broomstick arms eleven times. Would that be very nice?

The censorship of speech is a violation of the first ammendment. I don’t like Laura - she’s an overrated underqualified shock excuse for a radio counselor.
But I do defend her right to use words that only offend those who let them. Our culture is being strangled by brain-numbing political correctness. One only has to play victim and indignantly call for a lynching for some slip of the tongue.

Laura still has some junk in her trunk.

I seldom listen to good looking women but find myself often agreeing with them, mainly to get into their pants.

Laura needed to know that the meanings are not in words but in people. To slaves and their descendants, label or symbol “nigger”, meant diminution, shamefulness, exploitation, abuse which by now may have imbedded in every cell of their bodies.

If one could wash these feelings-meanings away that would be fine, but one cannot over just decades and blacks still facing hatred, abuse, belittlement by some people.

They are still called afro-americans but europeans are not called euro-americans or italo-americans.

There is only one way to win hearts and minds of some americans who are looked dwn on: stop looking dwn on them and accept them as americans.

Alas, americans numero uno do no show respect to american numero five, six, seven, or even two.
Nor do all american classes inherit equally their rightful inheritance: healthcare, education, right to be infomrmed, equal protection of the law, etc.

All this heralds that the top class[es will behave as lawys before: grab-steal as much for themselves by simly writing own `laws`. tnx

In the annals of radio history, Dr. Laura was and is
a blip on the screen of life. She is not a Ph.D. in
psychology and should not have been dispensing advice
and knowledge as if she was.
We are a nation that lives in the cult of
personality, we selected a president based on that
cult and have the results now.
Dr. Laura was an irascible and now we know racist
person who paraded herself as a person who should be
giving advice. I listened to her once, never again.
The reason, what she was proposing as advice was
nothing more than you can get from your neighbour at
the fenceline.
Should the people who listened to her mourn for the
loss of ‘Dr. Laura’ on the radio? Absolutely not.
She has proven the fact that someone who knows
nothing can go on the radio and dupe the people into
believing a lie and showing them that they are
sheeple.

Hmmm. How to take this?

So Dr. Laura claims her “First Amendment Rights” are being violated when pressure groups organize boycotts of sponsors.

Huh?

The First Amendment specifically restricts THE GOVERNMENT from impinging on someone’s freedom of speech. It DOES NOT prevent people from PROTESTING against someone else’s speech.

No one has violated Dr. Laura’s “Freedom of Speech.” They have merely protested what she has said. In other words, they too have exercised THEIR “Freedom of Speech.”

As a libertarian, I point out that both conservatives and liberals often misunderstand the First Amendment. “Freedom of Speech” does not mean you have the right to say anything, but no one has the right to criticize it. It means everyone has the right to say whatever they wish.

And certainly, no one has a “right” to sponsors to pay for their speech, no matter what they say.

I don’t believe for one minute that Laura Schlesinger is going to give up her
lucrative radio show.  She is just feeling sorry for herself.  How dare anyone object
to her racist, homophobic, misogynistic, warmongering world view.  She has
always been a bully who doesn’t know what she is talking about when she gives
advice.  She makes snap judgments, then browbeats the caller into accepting it.  If,
hopefully, she really is leaving - good riddance!
