‘Skateistan’ Goes to SundancePosted on Jan 20, 2011
Two years ago, we first caught wind of “Skateistan,” a project started by Australian skateboarding enthusiast Oliver Percovich with the aim of giving kids in Kabul, Afghanistan, a new outlet for fun and camaraderie, instead of war-stoked fear. Now, Percovich’s vision has been realized and captured on film in the aptly named documentary “Skateistan: To Live and Skate Kabul,” which figures into the lineup for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Check out the extended teaser below. —KA YouTube: Advertisement New and Improved CommentsWe are launching a major overhaul of our comments section. In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread. Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts. Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with. These kids are the lucky ones. They still have two legs. A lot of kids in Afghanistan don’t, thanks to American landmines. Another thing America can be really, really proud of.
