Shopping Sprees From HellPosted on Nov 26, 2010
After a day of overindulgence in food and drink, many Americans observe the nutty consumerist tradition known as Black Friday around the country. Here’s a montage of some of the most frightening stampedes in recent history, ones that give bargain hunting a more literal, feral twist. —KA YouTube via Gawker: Advertisement Previous item: Dan Savage: 'It Gets Better,' but It's Still Tough for GLBTs Next item: 'Left, Right & Center': Korean Clash, Taliban Scam New and Improved CommentsWe are launching a major overhaul of our comments section. Are these for real? Well, I never held out much hope for the human species, and this confirms our utter uselessness. Good grief, it makes me ashamed to be a biped.

Well .... other than stating the obvious, maybe local law enforcement and local governments should charge a surcharge for the extra strain on law enforcement and medical facilities if local stores want to continue to promote and conduct this type of thing ... sheeesh people, get a grip!
Maybe, and I stress the word maybe, this may force the customers to think of ways to generate this kind of profit without incurring a fine/charge and oh yes, maybe go without all the injuries, death, and spectacle.
Oh and by the way, before I get accused of being an upper class elitist, I happen to be permanently disabled, get Social Security Disability and live well below the poverty level. I avoid Black Friday like the plague!

Don’t think I can recall such ‘meaningful’
shopping going on here. Just a thought, but how
many of the things ‘bought’ during this ritual will
be forgotten or thrown away before that
wonderful day of crist person’s birthday arrives.
Noted on some news sites that this was the
Report thisbiggest and most ‘profitable’ black friday of all.
Well, no wonder because it wasn’t just a black
friday thing this year, more stores started the
black friday circle jerk on Wednesday night and
stayed open until…. well some just haven’t
closed. So hooray, the retailers have come across
a scheme to increase their sales of junk, so look
for black friday to start on labor day next year.

Consumerism writ large as violent greed- overconsumption and the national debt are doing as well as the economy is not.

After a day of overindulgence in food and drink?
Nutty consumerist tradition?
How dare you mock these people. Take a look at them. Are these the upper-
class types who shop at Target for kicks? These people are truly desperate.
Desperate to make their paychecks last long enough to provide decent holidays
for their families. Parts of the video are terrifying, but not for the reason you
seem to suggest.
This is what’s happening to America, folks. We are becoming two people: the
mass of those scrabbling at and near the bottom, and those looking on with
distaste from their enclaves of wealth and safety.
Where does Truthdig stand?
