Sandra Fluke: Rush Limbaugh’s Apology Changes Nothing

ABC News

She became a household name over the last week, thanks to the vitriolic attentions of one Rush Limbaugh, and on Monday, Georgetown University law student-turned-culture-war-front-liner Sandra Fluke went on “The View” to tell Barbara Walters and her cohorts about the controversy and Limbaugh’s attempt at an apology. Note to Rush: Skip the personal phone call.  —KA

Update: USA Today has published a list of advertisers, including AOL, that have elected not to run ads during Limbaugh’s show time.

The rats (advertisers on anti-woman shock jock shows) are deserting the sinking ship.
I wonder, though, if perhaps they also want to undercut the presidential campaigns of Republicans Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, both Catholic, who seem the most anti-woman of the Republican candidates.
The advertisers might prefer a more “moderate” challenger to President Obama because he’d have a better chance of winning.
Mitt Romney is one.  Even Ron Paul, who has been married to his only wife since 1957, is not against birth control and (while a pro-lifer) avoids reproductive issues, which he says are mainly for the states.

Oddsox

I didn’t mean to demean or anything when speaking of the “dirty” people.  we both know what I meant by “dirty” people.  But just in case my position is not clear to all, I call those who would support a creep such as Limbaugh for savaging a girl who never addressed him or anything he said prior to his visit to stupid land.

I saw him on TV saying she was demanding to get paid for her sexual adventures.  she said nothing of the sort and he knows that.  And then he went on to call her a slut and a prostitute and suggested she put sexual videos of her sexual exploits on TV where everyone could see them.

Her complaint which was not directed at Limbaugh was that the panel gathered to discuss a woman’s right to have their Insurance Company cover contraceptives was all male.  And she wanted to be on the panel so that there would be a woman there to discuss women’s needs.

The fat one didn’t stop to consider the hypocrisy that the Insurance Companies cover Viagra, a male sexual pleasure drug while they were refusing to cover contraceptives, something that would help stop unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases,  and the obvious - abortions.

That is why the hissing snake should be brought to task - because he sure is one male chauvinist pig.

“oddsox” claims there’s nothing wrong with being a feminist icon, then proceeds to trash Sandra Fluke for the third time here for allegedly trying to do that very thing.
Fluke is damned if she does, damned if she doesn’t.
What a great attitude toward young women.  I still smell a great stench of anti-feminism and/or envy coming from oddsox.
“3am mystic” is right.
This issue, while important, is less important than the top issues (1) making the USA into a democracy, (2) stopping USA imperialism, (3) putting all willing workers to work.

Oddsox, when you allow his behavior, even as critical as you say you are of it, to be the result of “a series of distractions orchestrated by the left”, you are asking for understanding, regardless of how meager or thin it may be.

3amMystic, you write (about me):
“according to you, Rush’s comments, though harsh, are understandable.”

What I actually wrote was: “There’s no excusing Limbaugh’s insults and name-calling.”

How did you connect those dots?

—-

The DNC “distraction” tactic was in place long before Fluke was a household name.
I detailed it on an Open Salon blogpost last month:
http://open.salon.com/blog/oddsox/2012/02/21/why_obama_is_favored_to_win_in_2012_—_and_how_to_beat_him

So this is just one in a series of cleverly designed diversions from the real issue:  The Economy.

Remember how this all got started?
Obama delivered a Presidential mandate that Catholic-owned entities cover contraception in their health plans.
A clear overstep of his Constitutional powers that crossed the line separating Church and State.
But somehow it’s become an issue of Women’s Rights with Debbie Wasserman Schultz calling out Republican candidates to denounce Rush Limbaugh.
No matter who you’re for, you have to admit:
It’s Politics brilliantly spun.

Alas, I have taken too many steps down this rabbit hole myself.
Others may continue if they care to, but this will be my last post on Fluke-Limbaugh issue (for the next 5 months, anyway.)
My earlier posts stand as written, see you on the other blogsites.

Still can’t see how something that costs $9.00 a month
at Target equates to a $1000.00 per year expense.
Planned parenthood lists the cost at $15.00 - $55.00 a
month on it’s website still no where near $1000.00 a
year in expense - Drugstore, com lists condoms $5.99 for
a box of 12 - to get $1000.00 worth you would need to
use over 5 a day - sounds like work more than fun

Oddsox, a person does not say the mean and stupid things that Rush says because of “distractions”; some people are just mean, and sometimes spurts of stupid come with it.

To me, this has the sound of bitter disappointment in one you once held in high regard, but need to see his “enemies” fall with him.  But Rush did not need anyone else to help him be Rush.  There are two reasons why right wing Republican politians and celebrities, beginning with Glenn Beck and ending with Rush, with Santorum trying to refire his engines, have crashed and burned: their beliefs and their mouths.  Both are their responsibity.

As far as your comment about me laying it on thick regarding Ms. Fluke coming across as intelligent and gentle, I see what I see; I hear what I hear.  But, according to you, Rush’s comments, though harsh, are understandable.  Whereas Ms. Fluke’s words and demeanor, though composed, and gentle, are phony.  For now, she is what I see and hear.  So is Rush.  You would think his friends would tell him to turn off the camera in his broadcast booth; it does not do him any favors.

Well, no Korky, I don’t notice any “sexism or envy in” myself.  Feeling just fine, thanks.

And I’m not saying there’s anything “wrong” with being a feminist icon, per se.
But let’s be up front about it.
Fluke doesn’t look the least bit nervous to me—that’s the point.

Look, I’ve been wrong before and I’ll still be around posting in 5 months, so let’s just see then.
Will Sandra Fluke have faded from the scene or still front-and-center?

I do note that my original post on Limbaugh and Fluke was elsewhere, so here it is again to provide full context:

—-

March 2 5:54pm

Rush went way over the line here.
He’s done this before.  I remember years ago when Limbaugh had a TV show, a crudity about Chelsea Clinton when she was still a teenager.
So yes, he has a problem with women—seems that’s his Achilles heel, where he marginalizes himself from Centrists like myself.

But from Limbaugh’s perspective, where he really stepped in it was allowing himself to be taken in, again, as so many conservatives and GOP pundits have, by the series of distractions orchestrated by the Left.

Whether it’s college snobbery, Constitutional overreaches spun into Catholicism, culture warfare, women’s issues or whatever’s next (my bet: race), it’s anything to keep the focus away from the #1 issue in this election year:  the Economy.

It’s disappointing that Santorum steps into every snare, but not a such a surprise.
As for the media’s eager duplicity—I’d expect nothing less (or is it more?)
But Limbaugh, I thought, was wise to Liberal/Progressive diversionary tactics.
Evidently not.

As for Sandra Fluke, at one time she may have been acting in earnest as a student concerned with women’s reproductive rights.
But now it’s plain she has embraced her part in the political play.
Fluke has memorized the scripted feminist talking points and delivers them like a pro.
Not buying the “victim” role—you’re just a little too polished for me, Sandra.
But welcome to your new chosen career.

“oddsox” got defensive and wrote, “tell me her responses weren’t rehearsed. . . . I’ll bet Fluke is still out there as a high-profile icon for feminism.”

What’s wrong with rehearsing when you are young and nervous and want to sound intelligent on national broadcasts?
What’s wrong with striving to be an icon for feminism?
Perhaps “oddsox” doesn’t even notice some unconscious sexism or envy in him/herself.

Korky & Cliff, I’m neither an ally of Limbaugh nor Fluke on this.

You’ve read my posts—there’s no excuse for what Rush said and I haven’t offered any.
But neither have I resorted in kind with insults and name-calling.
Nor have I wished physical harm to Limbaugh.
Not like what I’ve read from TruthDig bloggers (one on this very thread) and those on other sites.

And Fluke?
No—hardly a “skewering,” just statements of fact.  Watch and listen to the above tape again and tell me her responses weren’t rehearsed.

Next try this:
Fast forward, say 5 months.
I’ll bet Fluke is still out there as a high-profile icon for feminism.
Watch and see.

Now contrast her with Shirley Sherrod—you might remember she was the innocent smear victim of Andrew Breitbart’s during the USDA/Tea Party/Fox/Obama flap in 2010.  She lost her job over it, Obama asked her to step down.  Then Obama apologized personally.
But Sherrod hasn’t tried to use this as a springboard to something else.
(Sherrod offered a brief statement of condolences after Breitbarth’s death and plans to continue with her defamation suit against him.)
It is she, not Fluke, who personifies the “intelligent and gentle character” that 3amMystic descibes.
Sherrod is the one who showed courage, grace and class.

It’s easy to see the difference.

Korky Day, I agree with you about the dirty trying to wash the dirt off Limbaugh.

I may have mentioned the 24/7 Republican Demagogue radio station in my area that calls itself “Christian Radio”.  Oh are they upset, that someone has the temerity to call Rush out.

You want to hear somethig funny?

Tune in to my Christian Limbaugh Radio and see their anger that their “God” has been anointed with his own dirt.  Would you be surprised that they have blamed everyone, especially the Liberal Left - except - now this will surprise you - their hero Rush.

I haven’t heard any of the radio comments.
Nevertheless, I doubt if Sandra Fluke deserves the skewering just delivered by oddsox, which sounds like a cleaned-up version of Rush Limbaugh’s sexism by a supposed ally of Fluke.

3am Mystic:

There’s no excusing Limbaugh’s insults and name-calling.
It may cost him some affiliate stations, but he won’t be taken off the air altogether, despite the long-held wishes of many posters here and on other sites.  Instead, Limbaugh will feel the pain where it hurts most—in his wallet.
So it is and so it should be.

But 3amM, you write of “the intelligent and gentle character of Sandra Fluke…”

That’s laying it on a little thick, isn’t it?

At one time Sandra Fluke may have been acting in earnest as a student concerned with women’s reproductive rights.
But now it’s plain she has embraced her part in the political play.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/03/04/rush-limbaugh-s-apology-liberal-men-need-to-follow-suit.html

Rush Limbaugh apologized on Saturday for calling a
Georgetown Law student a slut for testifying about
contraception and starting a firestorm of outrage.
Kirsten Powers says the liberals who led the charge
need to start holding their own side accountable.

Yes, it’s true. Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Bill
Maher, Matt Taibbi, and Ed Schultz have been waging
it for years with their misogynist outbursts. There
have been boycotts by people on the left who are
outraged that these guys still have jobs. Oh, wait.
Sorry, that never happened.

But if Limbaugh’s actions demand a boycott—and they
do—then what about the army of swine on the left?

No doubt, there will be many church members this Sunday who will console one another with the lie, “It was evil liberalism that caused Rush to make such an unfortunate mistake.  And, after all, he has asked for forgiveness”.

These are the same people who believe the lie that to go back to the way things were in the 1950’s will make us a better class of people.  But when we compare the likes of Rush Limbaugh with the intelligent and gentle character of Sandra Fluke, and with president Obama who took the time to call her, there is no doubt where the real class dwells.

Still, I strongly believe that there are many women, and hopefully, a good number of men who have grown up in the religious right, who are now rethinking everything they have held dear.  Usually, it is not good arguments that change hearts, but the thoughtless and shameful words and actions of their champions that show them the logical conclusions of their beliefs.

Many of these people will not say anything for a while.  That’s fine.  An open change of character takes a while; and they will probably nod their heads in agreement when their religious fundamentalist friends make their usual thoughtless comments.  But, I am praying that when they walk into that voting booth for the general election they feel totally assured that no one sees them but God.

The Fat One, the former drug addict, remember his possession of 10,000 Pain Pills a few years ago?  Hell if it had been me, I would still be in Jail.  Only the well connected could get out of that.

Limbaugh has got to be one of the most sewer minded good for nothing people who ever lived.  Remember a couple of years ago when he proclaimed himself the head of the Republican Party?

Now that’s something he is eminently qualified for.

Listened to first 1/2 hour of Limbaugh today, expecting (hoping) to hear the apology repeated.
I should have known better—Rush isn’t backing down.

He refered to Saturday’s apology in the past tense and offered a new apology only to his listeners—again for his choice of words and his name-calling because that was sinking to the level of his Liberal critics.

Then he mispronounced Fluke’s name.
Subtle, but deliberate IMO.
If you listen to the MSM broadcasts, it’s “Flook,” rhyming with “look.”  (although BabaWaWa sez “Fluke” above, rhyming with “Luke.”)
Limbaugh’s pronounciation was “Fluck.”

Wow, just for fun (or a headache) you should all read down the comment thread on the HP with regard to this article. It’s disturbing. I honestly believe we Americans have lost our minds and, even more troubling, we’ve lost our sense of basic social decorum.

Having said this, I believe the Romans had a perfectly good and effective way of taming slanderers which would apply quite well today: In Rome if someone slandered you, you had impunity if you “terminated” your slanderer…..Talk radio would be so much more “educational” if we adopted a modern version of this practice.

Gee, thanks for being a paragon of “social decorum”. Tell me, if you think the authorities should execute people for saying dumb things—as if we live in an ancient dictatorship—why are you posting on a so-called “progressive” website? In fact, why are you even in America at all?
