“[W]hat Romney seeks to do is roll back 50 years of environmental legislation in the United States,” says Nation magazine defense correspondent Michael T. Klare in a podcast discussion of his new piece “The Race for What’s Left: The Global Scramble for the World’s Last Resources.”

“[H]e wants to do that first by taking away the government’s ability to regulate oil drilling in the United States and all other energy related activities and turning it over to the states,” Klare continues. “Now, it’s true that some states may have a pretty strict regulatory environment, but in many parts of the United States, in Texas and Pennsylvania and other friendly states in the U.S., the state level legislative environment is very friendly to big oil and it’s very likely that they will adopt legislation that will eliminate environmental considerations.”
