Project Glass: See the World Through Google’s EyesPosted on Apr 4, 2012
We still know very little about Google’s plan to take its services directly to the face, but from this promotional video we can determine that layabout New Yorkers need a lot of help managing their mid-afternoon jaunts. What the hell are we talking about? Google has a secret lab tasked with coming up with brave new concepts in technology. One of those is an augmented reality visor that sees what you see and intelligently interacts with the world around you. It all seems so magical, if a little creepy, but frankly this blogger would rather Google ironed the kinks out of his mobile phone before converting it to a face appliance. —PZS Advertisement Previous item: ‘Daily Show’: On Palin’s ‘Today’ Show Infiltration Next item: Cop Who Killed Retired Black Marine Is Named New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. Has to be the next big personal techno-social media thing. If Google is first, they had better do it right because Microsoft/Facebook (vs. Apple) will be right behind. Oh well, all the tech companies world-wide will want into this one. Think: your sun glasses replace that blue tooth ear thingy (and automatically adjust for sun light!) Sweet!

I don’t like being a naysayer, but this ad made me think two things:
1. Just watching the video made my head hurt attempting to keep up with both
where the POV character was doing and the pop-ups onscreen. Trying to multi-
task like this is a great way to get hit by a car or get in an accident.
2. I think a small handful of people will try this out, and although it may be neat
tech, it’ll eventually fizzle out. I remember when bluetooth hands-free headsets
were everywhere, and although you can still see them these days, I’ve noticed that
they’re on the decline.
I hate poo-pooing new tech out of the gate, but I can’t see this catching on.

I saw the first glimpse of this technology at the Ga Tech GVU Lab back in the early 2000s. There was a researcher there named Thad Starner who showed a wearable computer he was working on. The same concept as Google Glass, but not voice activated. He had designed a handheld keypad that he used.
Report thisI did a Google search for him, and guess what, he’s on leave at Google working on this project.
Where do I sign up for one of these?
