Professional prankster group Improv Everywhere’s “No Pants Subway Ride” is one cultural trend that appears to be taking off. Despite a frigid winter, participants in as many as 43 cities around the world commuted in their underwear, and we’ve got photos to prove it.

But why drop trou on the train? In the words of one participant, quoted by the BBC, “We’re just trying to put smiles on people’s faces.” As we say goodbye to a bummer of a decade, their timing couldn’t be better.

Cant speak for other cities there Dr Taam but here in Sydney we do it purely “just because” .... no promoting, no charities, no corporate interests (we’ve even refused offers).

There’s a purity about it this way that I like.

so this is the latest “cram people into a phone booth” trend? sigh. why? so they can tell their children “yeah, I rode the subway with no pants back in 2010. fuck yeah, I was hip and radical!”

did they at least donate their pants to truly needy people? did they raise money to help the poor with this stunt? or was it all just to get their photo up on Facebook?

This is one I would call a highly significant political commentary and a real boost for American prestige.

Don’t worry, after the ‘crotch bomber’, we’ll all be looking like this whenever we try to travel.

Boring, like most of these things.  But I guess if people like to do it, they might as well have their fun.  Meanwhile the rest of us have yet another reason to drive, walk, or ride a bicycle.
