Occupy Economics: Experts Speak in Support of the 99 Percent

One of the key concepts that the Occupy Wall Street movement has brought to the fore by drawing attention to economic inequality in the U.S. is the notion that the “free market” doesn’t serve the needs of all citizens equally.

In fact, as one economist who supports OWS points out in this video clip, our government, like any other, is susceptible to being “captured by wealthy interests,” and the system has been skewed in favor of those interests—right down to how fundamental concepts about the economy are taught. But this group of experts is lending its considerable brainpower to the cause of the 99 percent, a term that another featured smarty-pants calls “wonderfully apt.” Have a look.  —KA

Postscript for KA, whoever that is:

Reference in the article to “THE NOTION that the ‘free market’ doesn’t serve the needs of all citizens equally,” minimizes the remark as if it were merely a “notion” not a fact.“Notion” used in this way usually signifies lack of reliablity, proveability, verity.  (as in “Where did you get that notion?” etc)
Unless I’m very wrong, the proven injustices and insults of the “free market” system (which is really not a system, but a loaded game of chance) have been proven again and again beyond the shadow of a doubt, so it is a well-established fact that the “free market”  doesn’t serve the needs of all citizens. Therefore, it might be a a good idea to think about correcting the above statement.

Specialists in finance and economics among the 99%, like these speakers here, are obligated to stand and voluntarily support and protect the Occupy Moveement, by explaining to the many who are ignorant of what is going on—and do it in simple language, addressing the fundamentals of what is necessary for constructive reform. This helps to “authenticate” the movement and build its broad credibiity and by so doing, protect it from police abuse as well as make its authenticity clear.
