Obama and Leno Yuk It Up at White House Press Bash

That Barack Obama is such a card. While it’s always an unsettling experience to watch our nation’s president crack wise about matters he’s supposed to be all serious about on the other 364 nights of the year, Obama managed to work in some zingers during his stand-up act at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on Saturday—about Joe Biden’s f-bomb, Jay Leno’s late-night fight with Conan O’Brien and Arizona’s scary new immigration law, among other ripped-from-the-headlines topics.

Oh, and he even gave a wink and a nod to the “birthers” out there in the viewing audience, although no doubt they’re kind of a tough crowd.  —KA

I was glad to see someone comment on Obama’s “joke” about predator drones.  Considering how many civilans have been killed by these drones, making a joke about them is beyond tasteless.  If a Pakastani or Afghan made a joke about an IED or suicide bombers, we’d cite it as evidence about how “they” don’t value life like “we” do.  It really is disgraceful that our political and media elites laugh it up about murder.  Obama should be ashamed of himself, but by now he has so much more to be ashamed of, it hardly matters.

I agree with the above poster, and with Cindy Sheehan, about the callousness of President Obama with regard to the predator drone remark.

As was said so many times in the ‘60’s, for sorrowful reasons, “the whole world is watching.”

Most people, I would suppose, think that the killing of others by remote control is disgraceful. As they watch your remarks, maybe they, too, are hardening their hearts against our men and women on the ground. After all, we are occupiers.

War itself is insane and disgraceful. It is disgraceful, also, that
the mother of a deceased veteran has to tell the president to cool it with regard to the killing of other mothers’ children. Or, of children themselves.

Among the Afghanis already murdered in the “collateral damage” caused by the robot planes were children even younger than the Jonas brothers.

If things go as badly in the Persian Gulf as some have predicted, it won’t be long until the draft is reinstated. Then, my son will be forced to fight, or put on the spot to resist.

That’s no joke, Mr. President. If these wars, and this killing, have gone on too long for you to take them and their carnage seriously, maybe it’s time to ignore your generals and respect your people, especially those who voted because you put yourself forward as a thoughtful anti-war candidate.

STOP LAUGHING AT MADNESS.

Steven Colbert’s masterful, sublime, and gutsy appearance, with accomplice Helen Thomas, in 2006 at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner exposed that smug, self-congratulatory love-in for the incestuous and cynical charade that it is.  Ever since then the Correspondents’ Association has been careful, MORE than careful, to feature safe, yuk-yuk headliners to preserve the confection.  Colbert’s courage was a singular display that will never be matched by the sycophants who are part of the media-government complex.

For bad taste and moral disregard, Obama’s callous “joke” about using predator drones against young boys interested in his daughters rivaled GWB’s routine about looking for WMD’S.  What a different man he is from the image he carefully cultivated in 2008 and in his oh-so-sensitive and idealistic books.  Didn’t some
part of his brain send up a red flag with a stupid joke like that?
