Note to Vince and the Screenwriter: Electric Cars Are Not ‘Gay’

“Electric cars are gay,” says Vince Vaughn in an unfortunate attempt at humor in this trailer for Ron Howard’s new film, “The Dilemma.” It gets worse—Vaughn’s character continues, “not homosexual gay but, you know, ‘my-parents-are-chaperoning-the-dance’ gay.”

Given the recent outcry over bullying and last week’s suicide of a gay Rutgers student, this kind of thing isn’t funny—well, since we’re apparently splitting semantic hairs here, it’s funny as in “something’s off,” but not “ha-ha funny.”

Thus, Universal Studios has been compelled to remove the joke from its trailer, even though, as Gawker reported Friday, the studio says it prescreened the clip for targeted audiences. But Anderson Cooper wasn’t having it, as he told Ellen DeGeneres on her show Wednesday (see second clip below), and once the Coop caught on, it was a matter of time before Universal had to make changes.—KA

1. *sigh* agree 100% with the poster about this issue
being more about CENSORSHIP than anything else…

2. to that end, it is disconcerting that so-called progs
can NOT abide true, free speech…  i EXPECT my brother
and sister reichwing fundies to exercise CENSORSHIP, but
i expect better of ‘my’ side…
sadly, chickenshit pwogs -which is most of them- are
unable to abide free speech, ‘cause it is too messy…

3. similarly, the misplaced obsession with EXTREMELY
narrow boundaries of identity politics and endless
victimology is both preventing MANY decent (And
‘indecent’) people from identifying with such narrowly
cast roles in the progressive movement, and ALSO
diverting attention away from infinitely more important
issues…

(sorry, but some glib, profane, dick actor in a STUPID
FUCKING MOVIE, who uses the word ‘gay’ in anything but a
worshipful manner is NOT even in the top 1000000 of
things that are wrong with this country…)

policing speech like fascist pricks over nothingburgers
like this, ONLY HURTS YOUR CAUSE when it turns off a LOT
of people by the crybabying… (sure, that might be
insensitive and not PC, but it is reality, deal with
it…)

the truth is, 90% of us are more concerned about the
essential inequality of the rapacious kapitalist
imperialist war machine we are subjects of, rather than
some minority of a segment of a portion of a cohort who
dominate the conversation over petty slights (which is
what this is) and projected consequences which may or may
not occur…

4. um, there are LOTS of injustices we need to address;
should we prioritize them so that we obsess on the (real)
problems of a VERY SMALL minority, OR should we be
highlighting issues and actions which 90% of us can
identify with ? ? ?

5. fluffy, kumbayah pwogs need to realize that reichwing
fucktards are people too, AND they are ENTITLED to their
opinions and prejudices -no matter how wrongheaded-, just
as YOU are entitled to yours…
(no matter how wrongheaded: *gasp* pwogs can be wrong ? ?
? say it ain’t so, shmoe!)

as long as haters are just hating and not taking illegal
actions, THAT IS THEIR RIGHT TO HATE ! ! ! grow up and
get used to it… (um, i realize that libtards hating on
their brothers and sisters is ‘justified’, ain’t it ? ? ?
*snicker*)

(in that regard, i am 100% opposed to so-called ‘hate
crime’ laws, it is total bullshit and distracts from the
REAL issues at hand…)

unless/until we unite with our konservative brothers and
sisters who -though they may not realize it- agree with a
LOT of our agenda, then WE will get nowhere, and The
Machine (tm) will have won again…
(Machine LIKES us hissing and spitting at each other!)

unfortunately, proper PC pwogs don’t like a LOT of their
fellow citizens (especially if they use the word ‘gay’
without preapproval), so don’t want to unite with them,
NO MATTER IT COSTS THEM THE WORLD…

That is the Massachusetts or Mass-hole use of the word Gay.

It is unfortunate that the derogatory term ‘gay’ has roots in homophobia. Most derogatory ethnic terms also have roots in bigotry. In fact, bigotry really exists!

The issue here is censorship.

Is it appropriate to tell gay or ethnic jokes? Should we censor all portrayals of characters who would tell such jokes? Should we censor all portrayals of characters who may actually harbor such sentiments? Perhaps we should censor portrayals of events such as the Holocaust or African genocide so as not to possibly offend their supporters.

Art is a reflection of reality. Real art cannot be censored any more than can reality itself.

This issue is truly offensive because what it amounts to is nothing more than a Hollywood power play. This is hardly a front-line human rights issue, given the massive acts of genocide currently being perpetrated globally.

Those who would flex their power and expend resources to these petty ends should be ashamed. To those I would ask: take yourself out of the equation for five minutes and look at the real picture. Human rights aren’t just about gay rights and gay jokes; human rights aren’t just about flexing producer power in fancy chairs or poolside in hilltop mansions.

Wake up. Do something that might matter outside of your precious sewing circle if you really give a shit. Human rights actually exist outside of the MPAA. Have you heard of famine and slaughter? Does it matter if it’s ‘gay’ or not? This is an affront to all true defenders of human rights.

pretty sad state of affairs when people whine and complain over a joke.  very very
very sad.  people are being killed all over the world and people are hungry in your
cities, but ohhhhhh, someone made a joke in a movie that you do not even have
to see.  oh my, have you nothing better to do?  your tax dollars are being used to
kill babies!  ‘oh, my feelings are hurt by a guy making a joke’

In America, homophobia is the last acceptable bigotry. There is also religious anti-muslim bigotry - except thankfully muslim don’t put up with it.
