Jon Stewart Tears Into GOP Over Sandy Aid Fail in ‘Daily Show’ Return

After a three-week break, “The Daily Show” returned Monday night with the well-rested host raring to go after House Republicans for their messed up response to the Hurricane Sandy aid package.

You may recall that House Speaker John Boehner initially shelved a $60 billion bill to help victims of October’s superstorm, agreeing to bring it up for a vote only after the decision led to major infighting in the Republican Party. The House ultimately passed a watered down $9 billion stopgap measure that would cover only floods. Still, even that was too much for some GOP House members, as 67 of them voted against it.

“This is just a simple, down-the-middle, black-and-white, cut-and-dry, warm cup of what would Jesus or any other human being that isn’t an asshole do, and you blew it. You blew it,” Stewart said.

“Look, Republicans—I get it,” Stewart added. “I get that you’re ‘the party of limited government,’ but we’re not talking about Obamacare here. This was two paragraphs giving aid to people in need and you still couldn’t vote for it because of some stupid principle that you yourselves only occasionally live by.”

But Stewart saved his best for Mississippi Rep. Steve Palazzo, excoriating him for hypocritically voting against the flood insurance bill despite requesting the same kind of help in May for residents in his state still affected by 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.

“Here’s a thought experiment: Let’s pretend that instead of your constituents, it’s someone else’s constituents in New York, and instead of seven years later, it’s two months later, and instead of a baseline temperature of 60 degrees it’s fucking freezing,” he said. “And instead of being an asshole, you weren’t.”

Welcome back, Jon Stewart!
